A reported $5,300 was taken during a burglary early Thursday morning last week at the Eagles Lodge in Grand Coulee. Police stated that neither doors were broken into but apparently either had been left unlocked or the burglar had a key to the lodge. Manager Iva Graves said the security camera showed a man entering the building and then leaving. She said she couldn’t identify the man. A copy of the security recording was being prepared for police. Graves said the place was locked sometime after midnight and the intruder entered at about 2:45 a...
A group of volunteers raised nearly 150,000 rainbow trout in Banks Lake over the winter and released them from net pens in Electric City Saturday. The Providers of Wildlife and Environmental Resources (POWER) fed the fish from last October on, growing them from 19.2 per pound to up to 5.4 per pound. They lost 2,594 to cold water disease, the group reported, and released 147,419 fish into the lake. POWER operates the large net pens for about nine months each year, raising about 300,000 fish using automated feeders that have to be stocked with...

The cleanup crew included Kevin Tipps, Frank Shattuck, Rich Gerard and A. J. Gerard. Federal and state agencies are preparing to reintroduce grizzly bears and additional wolves into Washington’s rural counties. Lawless environmental groups like Earth First and Earth Liberation Front attempted to create habitat for these dangerous animals in the 1980s by sabotaging logging equipment, tree spiking, damaging electric lines/towers, bombings and other illegal acts. They have shifted tactics and graduated from universities with MS and PHD degrees in environmental sciences and law degrees. They are now state of Washington and f...
An important part of serving in Congress is responding to questions from constituents on a range of topics, from Obamacare to national security and religious persecution abroad. I always look forward to hearing from constituents who contact my office by telephone, email, or letters. These questions often touch on important issues facing our country, and some deserve a wider audience, which is why I would like to share a couple with you. One retired constituent from Central Washington emailed my office with this question: How do you plan on...

Geary Oliver has been named Lake Roosevelt's new high school head football coach. Oliver was selected and approved for the position by school board action at its March meeting. Oliver has been involved in a variety of football positions in the district for a number of years, starting in 1994, helping out the team as an assistant. He has been active since in one way or another, including three years filming the games. He has been assistant football coach at Lake Roosevelt High School for the...
The Raiders dominated the diamond in Coulee Dam Thursday, taking down the Manson Trojans 13-3 in Lake Roosevelt’s only contest of the week. Raider Baseball had been scheduled to play four games last week. But their Tuesday game against Liberty Bell had to be moved due to the rain. Then a Saturday doubleheader against Oroville was postponed due to injuries and other factors. “We played well as a team,” Head Coach Billy Nicholson commented on the Manson game, adding praise for his pitchers. “Chance (Garvin) and Devan (Black) both did well on...
The Lady Raiders racked up positive stats in a home win last week, but rescheduled two other games they’d been set to play in Grand Coulee. They were able to play the Trojans of Manson on Thursday, when they picked up their first win of the new season. “There’s been a lot of improvements since the first game,” Head Coach Jamie Lezard said, “We just have to keep working on the fundamentals of the game and improve on a daily basis and everything will be OK.” The final score in the game was 11-1, ending in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule....
Raider golf started Thursday with a home opening match against Omak. In girls’ competition, Jonell Denchel won the match for Lake Roosevelt, shooting a 62. The medalists for the boys in the match were Cameron D. of Omak and Brandon A. of Omak. Each shot a 44 at Banks Lake Golf Course. “This was the first competitive high school match for everyone on the squad,” commented Raider Head Coach Steve Files. “They all stepped up and represented themselves and our school very well.” Files said the good weather has allowed the team to get out on the co...
Two Raiders placed at the Ezra Gordon Invitational last Saturday in Colville, and many others showed positive improvements. Two Lake Roosevelt shot put throwers laid their claims to podiums in the meet, one girl and one boy. Octavio Alejandre took home first place in the shot, throwing 46 feet, 9 inches, an improvement of 8 inches over his throw last week. In the discus, Alejandre did not place but threw 108-11. Katelynn Schilling took home third in the shot, throwing 32-5.5, five inches better that last week. “Athletes continued to improve the...
Raider Tennis competed in three matches last week with a great deal of success. “They are all very competitive and regularly push each other at practices to improve,” Head Coach Steve Archer said. “I am hopeful that each week we will continue to see their improvement.” In their matches last week, the Raider boys defeated Wilbur-Creston on March 23 by 4-1, then beat Davenport 4-1 on Friday. Oroville handed the Raider boys their only loss of the week Wednesday. The Raider girls defeated all three opponents, setting up a great start to the season....

A fire early Monday morning destroyed the office and storage area of the DWK Fowler Construction Company in Delano. The fire broke out about 6:15, and when firefighters responded they found smoke coming out of the eaves of the building. Firefighters had trouble accessing the fire through the roof because of metal roofing, building owner Wayne Fowler said. Firefighters were eventually able to extinguish the blaze with help from the Fowler crew and a backhoe that tore the end of the building out...

Emily Robinson is celebrating 25 years at the helm of Flo's Cafe. She describes herself as "sarcastic," but in reality, she is friendly and her customers, for the most part, love the insults she casts at them. The cafe has gained some fame from far and near. A New York Times columnist had dropped in at Flo's some years ago while in the area hunting. The reporter was captured by the rows of hunting caps and coffee mugs. This was all shared with Times readers. "I had a reporter from the Portland...
A test to fill a vacated sergeant position in the Grand Coulee Police Department has been scheduled for April 11. Civil Service Commission Chair Alan Cain said the position will be filled from within the department. Four officers have applied. Cain said the oral interviews will be handled by the CSC’s chief examiner, Kris Theisen, and several law enforcement officials from around the area. The officers will be rated after the oral tests, and the top candidates will go to police Chief John Tufts for appointment. The officer selected will r...

Big changes may come to the four-corners intersection of the two state highways in Grand Coulee, or not, after a petition got the attention of a state agency with 1,100 signatures. Local residents will have an opportunity to see some of the state Department of Transportation's proposed traffic control alternatives to the intersection at a meeting of the Grand Coulee City Council, April 7. The session starts at 6 p.m. DOT Traffic Engineer Terry Berends said his presentation will include a number...
Center Elementary School and its surrounding property is officially for sale. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board had declared the property surplus in February, and after a public hearing to determine what to do with the property Monday night, it decided to list the building and the total 8.5 acres. The school board also authorized Superintendent Dennis Carlson to order an appraisal of the building and property. Only a single resident, Hank Wiebe, spoke to the board about the property. Wiebe resides next to the school, and commented...
Not a day goes by when I don’t hear from veterans in our community who are struggling – struggling to access quality care, and struggling with a bureaucratic system that continues to fail them. That is unacceptable. We should be honoring the men and women who have dutifully served our country, not making them feel like a burden. That’s why I am working in Congress to advocate for veterans across Eastern Washington – veterans like Pearl Harbor survivor Bud Garvin, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year. An American hero, Bud invaded...
The Raiders came home from a double header in Bridgeport Saturday with two wins. Lake Roosevelt was challenged in the first game, with the Mustangs scoring seven runs, but in the end outscored them by two in the 9-7 LR win. In the second game, the Raiders bats came alive and scored 21 runs. Raider pitching and defense was stingy and gave up only two runs. In the first game, Chance Garvin and Trey Nicholson went two for four at the plate with a double apiece. Tony Desautel was one for two. Tyrell Kaiser pitched all eight innings with 18...
The Lady Raider softball team opened the season at home Saturday to two losses. “It was a tough day for the Lady Raiders,” Head Coach Jamie Lezard said. “We had too many errors, left too many base runners out there, and were having a hard time finding the strike zone.” Lezard said both games against the Bridgeport Fillies ended in the third inning, due to the mercy rule. The Fillies had an offensive edge on the Lady Raiders. In the first game, Lake Roosevelt scored 10 runs but gave up 21. In the second, the Fillies tallied up 18 to the Lady Ra...
A small Lake Roosevelt team travelled to West Valley High School in Spokane Valley for the Howard Dolphin Invitational Saturday. “We took a small group of determined Raiders to compete against 1800 other athletes at the West Valley Invite,” Head Coach Lori Adkins said. “The coaches were very pleased with the comradeship the LR team showed for each other during the seven-hour competition.” It was the season opener for the Raiders, and many either showed good improvement from the start of last season, or picked up right where they left off. Ka...
John Nordine is Electric City’s new mayor, sworn in last Tuesday evening by the city’s attorney, Katherine Kenison. Nordine, a serving council member, was mayor pro-tem, and had indicated that he would be willing to take over the city’s top political post after Jerry Sands resigned. The council agreed, and voted to make him mayor. He was quick to put an end to the constant interruptions the council has been experiencing lately from people attending the meetings, with exchanges between members of the audience and council members, and somet...
The things people flush down their toilets is giving Grand Coulee’s wastewater treatment staff fits. And it isn’t just Grand Coulee that is having this problem. Councilmember David Tylor brought the problem up at a recent council meeting and stated that the city needs to find a way to get people to stop putting handy wipes, toys, articles of clothing and other things into their toilets and then flushing them down. City Clerk Carol Boyce explained that the handy wipes are probably the worst thing placed in toilets. Gary Abbott, of the was...

Tim Lynch, Coulee Dam's wastewater treatment manager, is a remarkable fellow. He completed 40 years on the job last Wednesday, and town officials recognized him with pizza and cake at the town hall. What's so remarkable is that he has completed 40 years with the same employer, the town of Coulee Dam. In talking about it later, Lynch said it actually is about 43 years, since he also worked earlier summers as a part-time employee. What's really remarkable is a visit to his wastewater treatment...
The council at Electric City voted last Tuesday night to submit changes to the city building code to the state for review, providing local residents and others a 60-day period to respond to the changes. The council amended a report from the planning commission to state that the size of accessory buildings has to conform to the International Building Code, which allows up to 3,000 square feet. But submitting the changes to state for review didn’t happen soon enough to satisfy three members of the planning commission who resigned after the c...
Local citizens will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed sale of Center Elementary School and its surrounding property at a meeting before the school board, Monday, March 23, beginning at 5:30, at the secondary library in the new education complex. The district acquired the building and some 8.5 acres of land for $155,000 from the Continental Land Company earlier this year and proposes to sell the property after the school board declared it surplus at its meeting Feb. 2. Citizens can comment on the sale or why the district should reta...
