Raider Cross Country runners ran their last tune-up race at the Oroville Invitational Oct. 18, when nearly the entire team broke personal records. "Both Girls and Boys ran strong races and are looking toward the end of the season matchups," Head Coach Gary Darnold said. "We are battling with Tonasket. The Lady Raiders lost at home to the Bridgeport Fillies Oct. 14 in a four-game match that featured many close scores. LR and Bridgeport both made mistakes that allowed the other team to stay in or win games. In the first game of the match, the Fillies struck hard and fast and cruised to an easy win. LR came back in the second game, playing with greater effort. The Fillies did come back into it but the Ladies held them off for a win. White Swan attacked early and often to cruise to a victory over the Raiders at White Swan Oct 17, pushing the score by halftime to 42-0. Lake Roosevelt scored all their points in the fourth quarter. Lady Raider Volleyball split its matches last week. At home Oct. 7, Lake Roosevelt faced a Liberty Bell team they had defeated back in September, but the rematch turned into a Mt. Raider boys' cross country had a successful day at Omak Oct. 7, taking second out of seven teams. "The boys team ran very strong, placing second to Cascade while defeating four other schools," Head Coach Gary Darnold said. "This was a total team effort as each runner on the team makes an equal contribution to our team's success." In the first meeting between the Raiders and the Mabton Vikings, the Vikings came out the victors. Mabton defeated LR 32-0. “Mabton was clearly the more physical team tonight,” Head Coach Steve Files said. “We are capable of playing better, and we’ll have to if we want to be competitive in our division.” In the first quarter both teams’ defenses held, firm with Jacob Palmer recording two sacks for the Raiders. Lady Raider Volleyball lost both matches last week to Central Washington 2B North leaders Brewster and Okanogan. Lake Roosevelt now owns a 2-5 win-loss record in league play and 3-5 overall. Raider Cross Country returned to race action on October 4th at Kettle Falls where they ran in the CAN-AM Invitational hosted by Colville High School with 20 other schools in attendance. Eleven Raider boys and four girls competed in the races on Saturday. Lake Roosevelt dropped its Central Washington 2B South opener at Warden Oct. 3 by the score of 38-7. The loss puts the Raiders at a 1-3 overall win-loss record and 0-1 in CWL 2B South play. In front of a sparse home crowd on Sept. 26, the Raiders won their first game of the season, holding off the Bridgeport Mustangs, 21-20. “Great team win for the Raiders,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files said. “We were tough, resilient, and opportunistic out there.” The Raiders saw a great improvement in the play up front with the return of senior Octavio Alejandre to the offensive line. Raider Cross Country had a delayed start to the 2014 season as Moses Lake cancelled their Sept. 12 invitational. Instead, the Raider cross country team started at Bridgeport Sept. 16 with a 2.2-mile race. Lady Raider Volleyball picked up its third win a row Sept. 16 at home against Oroville. “It was our first home game, the girls were pretty excited and a little nervous playing at home,” Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said. “Once the nerves settled in, they took control. The Raiders faced, but fell to, the Eagles in Soap Lake last Friday in a non-league football game. LR was unsuccessful in bringing home the first win of 2014 as Soap Lake defeated the Raiders, 26-12. “We had our moments, but for the most part didn’t play as well as we are capable,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files commented. LR Football opened their 2014 season Friday night at home against the 0-1 Tonasket Tigers, as some Raiders had to step up to fill starting roles because of ineligibility or injuries. Lady Raider Volleyball travelled to Davenport Sept. 6, for the season opening tourney. Only 13 Lady Raiders (seven varsity, six JV) were practice eligible to partake in the tournament. The small numbers hurt the Lady Raiders in matches where the opponents were able to sub out players but LR was not. LR lost to Omak, Almira/Coulee-Hartline, and Davenport in two-game sets. I seem to recall the Star's editorial support of the "status quo" of gasoline prices here in the Coulee a few weeks ago. It was implied that detractors just didn't “know Jack" and that the higher prices were due to the free market system which locals are willing to pay for. It appears we will now get to see a case study in free market economics now that a new source is offering gas at 25 cents a gallon less. Octavio Alejandre and Chyenne Kelly-Marconi both placed for the Raiders at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association State 2B Track and Field meet in Cheney last week. At the meet, held at Eastern Washington University, Octavio Alejandre excelled for LR in the shot put. In the prelims, Alejandre had thrown only 43 feet, 5.5 inches, far short of his personal record of 46 feet-plus, and shorter still from the 48-foot goal he had set for himself at state. Three Lady Raider softball players have been named to the Central Washington 2B North All-League squads for the 2014 season. Lake Roosevelt freshman Tristen Adolph was named to the First Team CWL 2B North because of her pitching and base running ability. Raider Tennis competed in District 6 Tournament at Cashmere last week, where their season came to an end. Raider golf came up short at the the District 5-6 Golf Tournament at Lake Chelan Golf Course May 20, so no Raider golfer will advance to the state tournament this season.
