August 27, 1900, U.S. Army physician James Carroll purposefully infected himself with Yellow Fever using a single mosquito. Carroll developed a severe case of Yellow Fever. This selflessness allowed his colleague, Army pathologist Water Reed, prove that mosquitoes transmitted this deadly disease.
