August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. It outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been adopted by many southern states after the Civil War, like literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting. The act came 95 years after the Fifteenth Amendment to our Constitution.
