July 10, 1979, four armed men entered the caves at Carlsbad Caverns National Park near Carlsbad, New Mexico, and fired their weapons sporadically. They took a park employee hostage. A total of 105 visitors were trapped in the cave. The captors demanded $1 million in ransom and passage to Brazil. They also asked for an opportunity to talk with a newspaper reporter to gain national publicity.
