Joan Carlson Gardner

With hearts full of love and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Joan Carlson Gardner, who passed away on April 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Joan was a woman of remarkable strength and beauty whose warm spirit touched everyone she met.

Joan was born on January 11, 1955, in Yakima, Washington, to Carl and Beverly Carlson. The third of six children, she spent her early years in Seattle before her family relocated to Grand Coulee. She graduated from Lake Roosevelt High School in 1973.

In June 1973, Joan married Malcolm "Larry" Mackey, and together they had two children, Brett and Nicole. In 1983, she married Rod Gardner, and they welcomed a son, Rodney. Joan and Rod shared many years of love and partnership, building a life centered on family, laughter, and unwavering support.

Joan worked a variety of jobs throughout her life, but one of her greatest joys was caring for her great-nephews. She was especially known for her exceptional cooking, generous heart, and lively spirit. Joan had a unique gift for making everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved.

She is survived by her husband, Rod Gardner; her children, Brett (Lisa) Mackey, Nicole (Brian) Card, and Rodney Gardner; her cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Mikaila (Gage), Tanner, Hokulea, and Kainalu, who were the light of her life; her siblings, Carla (Gary) Steffens, Patti (Deets) Ayling, and Bobby (Lisa) Carlson; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Beverly Carlson; her sister, Jackie; and her brother, Lloyd.

A celebration of Joan's life will be held on July 9, 2026, in Coulee Dam, Washington.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the athletic departments at Lake Roosevelt, North Beach, or Newport High School; places that reflect her lifelong dedication to cheering on her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Whether in the stands, on the sidelines, or traveling miles just to be there, she was their biggest fan. Donations may be sent with a note indicating they are given in honor of Joan Gardner in support of the selected school's athletic department. Additional details on how to contribute will be shared at the service and through family updates.

Joan will be deeply missed and forever loved.
