May 5, 1830, John B. Stetson was born in Orange, New Jersey. He spent his early years working in his fathers hat-making shop where he learned the trade. Stetson then moved on, setting up his own hat making business in Philadelphia. It was there that Stetson became ill with tuberculosis.
