Garlic still generating interest

Nespelem, WA) Inchelium Red Garlic Revitalization Coalition (IRGRC) hosted their second annual garlic planting event at the Colville Tribes Forestry Greenhouse site in Nespelem, WA. Community members from across the reservation and from neighboring communities joined in to learn about the Inchelium Red Garlic project.

Terri Williams, representing Colville Reservation Conservation District, demonstrated how to prepare garden beds for planting and how to plant garlic. She also demonstrated some of the garden tools to use to make the job easier.

Chef Maria Hines, from Blue Sky Minds, provided a cooking demonstration for a delicious garlic pesto pasta salad. Participants were able to enjoy this salad as part of their lunch.

The Inchelium Red Garlic project started in 2020, as part of Colville Reservation WSU Extension's USDA NIFA FRTEP (Federally Recognized Tribes Extension Program) Food Sovereignty/Food Access project. It was as a way for people to learn about fall gardening. The Inchelium Red Garlic project demonstrated how people can plant food in the fall for summer harvest. It also showcased the variety of garlic that many had forgotten. This variety was discovered growing on the Colville Reservation in the community of Inchelium, for which it is named.

In 2023 the IRGRC was formed. This group is a collaborative effort and is comprised of members from Blue Sky Minds, L.I.G.H.T. Foundation, Colville Reservation Conservation District, and Colville Reservation WSU Extension. This project aims to fight food insecurity.
