Grant County residents may dispose of household hazardous waste for free at two different events in May.  The first event will be held on Friday, May 3 from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Quincy Aquatic Center, 724 F St. SE.  The second will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Grant County Road District Shop near Moses Lake at 12171-Wheeler Road.  Both events are for waste generated by households only.  Please note that containers will not be returned.

Hazardous products have labels with words such as danger, caustic, flammable, and poison.  Examples include paint, automotive oil, paint thinner, rechargeable batteries, solvents, brake fluid, aerosols, spot removers, drain openers, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, mercury containing devices such as thermostats and thermometers, swimming pool chemicals, and hobby chemicals.  Waste must be in containers no larger than five gallons.

Residents may bring a maximum of 10 mercury containing lights per person to the event.  Fluorescent light tubes, Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), and High Intensity Discharge Lights (HIDs) are accepted.  Do not tape lights together.

The following items will not be accepted:  propane tanks, automotive batteries, empty containers, agricultural waste, commercial waste, explosives, ammunition, asbestos, radio-active material, cylinders, Poison A gases, refrigerant compressors, and leaking containers.  There is year-round collection available for automotive batteries and propane tanks.

Products should be brought in original labeled containers if possible.  Pack the waste to prevent spills during transportation.

The event is sponsored by Grant County and the Department of Ecology.  For more information, call Grant County Solid Waste at 754-6082 ext. 3508.
