Following a year of work, the friendly merger of Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union and STCU will culminate this weekend.

All five CDFCU branches will be closed Friday, then reopen Monday as STCU, though it will take a while longer to change exterior signage, a credit union press release said Tuesday.

Nearly all CDFCU employees have chosen to make the move to STCU, meaning credit union members will continue to see the same familiar faces at their favorite branch. The employees are maintaining their seniority and will immediately be eligible for STCU benefits such as health coverage and tuition reimbursement.

Access to CDFCU accounts, including online and ATM access, will end Thursday evening, and CDFCU debit cards will be deactivated at that time. CDFCU members can activate their new STCU debit cards and begin using them Friday. Starting Monday, they can enroll in STCU online banking and download the STCU mobile app.

CDFCU was formed in 1941 to serve U.S. Bureau of Reclamation employees working on the Columbia Basin project. Over the decades, the field of membership grew to include anyone in a six-county area. Branches are in Brewster, Coulee Dam, Creston, Omak and Republic.

Founded by educators in 1934, STCU has more than 230,000 members, and $4.5 billion in assets. The merger with CDFCU will increase the number of STCU branches to 35, in Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

While both credit unions are financially sound, officials say, it is increasingly difficult for small and medium-sized credit unions like CDFCU to provide the technology and financial products needed to ensure continued success. STCU has the resources to meet those challenges.

Earlier this year, the boards of both credit unions voted unanimously to support the merger. Put to a vote of CDFCU members, the merger was approved by a large majority.

STCU has established a dedicated phone line for CDFCU members with questions regarding the merger: (888) 782-8669. Additional information is available at stcu.org/CDFCU.
