Lake Roosevelt Schools to feature STEAM Fridays

Students at Lake Roosevelt Schools may start saying “TGIF” for two more reasons this school year: early release, and a different educational approach.

On Fridays, students at LR, from kindergarten age to seniors in high school, will be participating on “STEAM” focused projects, or projects that revolve around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

“Activities and experiences will look different depending on grade level and topic,” Lake Roosevelt Junior/Senior High Principal Sara Kennedy explained to The Star in an email Tuesday.

She said that Superintendent Paul Turner “is encouraging teachers to ‘think outside the box’ to offer students enrichment opportunities revolving around STEAM.”

“Lessons and activities could range from science projects to outdoor field trips to guest speakers,” she said. “In Jr/Sr High school we are starting the year with smaller, in-class activities and will build over time.”

Additionally, Friday schedules include a 1:05 p.m. release for students, when teachers will have time to attend training and collaborate with each other, Kennedy explained.
