A young family caught in the Cold Springs Fire apparently left their wrecked pickup in an attempt to get to safety Tuesday afternoon, but their 1-year-old son lost his life.

The family was found on the banks of the Columbia River, the parents with third-degree burns and the baby already deceased, Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

Jacob and Jamie Hyland, 31 and 26, of Renton, Washington, and their baby were found before 10 a.m. Wednesday and were taken by Colville Tribal Natural Resources Department boat to Bridgeport State Park, where they were met by a Brewster Ambulance crew who took them to Three Rivers Hospital.

The parents were flown from there to Harborview Medical Center.

Hawley said the sheriff's office had received a call about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, asking for an attempt to locate the family last known to have been in the area of Cameron Lake Road and Paxton Canyon Road.

Their truck had been found wrecked and burned but not occupied, a deputy was told, as the family had tried to leave their property to get away from the fire. Okanogan County Search and Rescue was called on to find them, which they did Wednesday morning.

Sheriff's Office detectives and Colville Tribal Police detectives are investigating the death of the child, Hawley said, and investigators "still working to determine the cause of the fire."

Hawley asked that anyone with information about the cause of the fire to contact him at 509-422-7200.
