Wrestlers siege Davenport

Raider wrestlers hit the mats in the Okanogan Jamboree and the Davenport Invitational last week, taking the team title in the latter after their initial season warm-up in the former.

The Raiders attended the Davenport Invitational on Dec. 7 where they scored the most team points, 165, out of 14 teams.

“I was very pleased with the results,” Head Coach Billy Monroe said. “The kids showed up and wrestled hard. Winning the team title was really neat. It came down to the last two matches of the tournament for us to get first place as a team, and the kids came through. Myka Boyd pinned his opponent from Reardan to seal the victory.”

“We had five kids in the finals and ended up with two champions,” Monroe continued. “Colton Jackson was dominant, wrestling less than two minutes for the entire tournament and pinning his way to first place. Landon Krohn, a freshman, was our other champion, and he won two tough matches before pinning his opponent in the finals.”

The Okanogan Jamboree on Dec. 4 “was a great way to start the year off, especially for our younger and less experienced wrestlers,” Monroe said. “It gave them a chance to see a little bit of live competition outside of our own wrestling room and an opportunity to learn. I was really impressed with the way the kids supported each other. There were always five or six teammates in the corner or on the side of the mat when one of our guys was wrestling.”

The Raiders will wrestle next at the Cashmere Invitational on Dec. 14, starting at 10 a.m.

“Next weekend at Cashmere will be a tough tournament and I’m looking forward to seeing how we match up,” Monroe said.
