Felt privileged to show young how we must work together

I wanted to thank the students and parents who allowed me to be a part of your lives for the last three years as the GCDJH eighth-grade girls basketball coach. It has truly been a pleasure to put that time into our youth by either working on their basketball skills or just being there as a leader. I’m seeing more and more that guidance and leadership is something that our youth need, not only as encouragement but as stability.

Being told over and over that you’re not good enough is just as bad as being told over and over that you’re the best and need no guidance. I hope that every young person experiences after-school activities, no matter if you’ve done the sport for years or are just now starting. Working with your peers is what will keep you working together as a community for generations to come.

I didn’t have my contract renewed this year and also was not selected when I interviewed for the position after I re-applied. If you know me, I wanted to fight, but also believe things happen for a reason. So, I wanted to express my thanks and also make the community aware of the changes happening in our schools. I ask and encourage you to question and be aware of everything going on. I’ve seen a lot of separation and favoritism, and it wasn’t good. I thought me being in this position would help with that since I, too, grew up in this school district and have seen similar issues. Please go to your school board and make sure they know your concerns, because I’m finding out that they are not given all the information on what is happening outside of their monthly meetings.

Since I do believe things happen for a reason, I’m OK with this, but when it comes to the young people who are OUR FUTURE, I felt privileged as a Native Woman to be able to show how we HAVE to work together and RESPECT our differences. So, THANK YOU again; it was my honor to be a part of your program. Good Luck and GO LR!
