Park district commissioners Monday voted to accept the resignation of one commissioner, then immediately filled her position with a young recruit. Commissioner Debbie Bigelow, who has served for nearly three years despite being retired.

"Although I will continue forever to support this organization," she said, "I no longer have the energy or community connections that are so important to the success of this organization."

Bigelow, who retired as chief executive officer of Coulee Medical Center, said she is ready to give another person the opportunity to make a difference.

"And because of my faith in the ability and possibility of this organization to make a dramatic impact on this community, I feel my position would be better served with another community member who can truly help make things happen," she wrote in her letter of resignation.

Moments later, nearing the end of their brief meeting, Joshua Vega was nominated and voted into the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District commission seat Bigelow had just vacated.

Vega, 19, said he was interested in making a difference and gaining experience.

The nephew of Commissioner Ben Hughes, Vega also works at Coulee Medical Center in the housekeeping department.

Originally from California, he said he attended Lake Roosevelt High School in his junior year and played football for the Raiders.
