Twenty Years Ago

When the local community turns out to vote on the Grand Coulee Dam School District levy Feb. 2, Coulee Dam citizens will also decided whether they want to annex the town into the North Central Regional Library system.

Miss Grand Coulee Dam Area Junior Miss Brita Montes placed in the top 10 in the state competition this past week. Shoe also won scholarships for placing in the top three in categories: Fitness, presence and composure.

The GCD Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Vintners & Brewers annual wine and microbrew tasting event on Jan. 30.

Ray Halsey is back at his post as mayor of Electric City since an accident had sidelined him since last October.

Valinda Knighten has been promoted to the city clerk position at the city of Grand Coulee. Knighten started working for the city of Grand Coulee in 1989.

Selected as student of the week at LRHS is Kasiakin Adolph. Amanda Godsil was selected athlete of the week.

Thirty Years Ago

The Fraternal Order of the Eagles is in hock to the city of Grand Coulee over a long unpaid gambling tax. Eagles secretary Larry McClain attended city council Jan. 17 seeking a way to pay the back taxes which the club unknowingly accrued. The debt is $11,667.44.

Cities and towns in Okanogan County are facing legal action by county commissioners who have decided to sue them for jail fees.

With over 70 members and guests present, many in centennial costume, GCD School Superintendent James Keene and Grand Coulee restaurateur Al Thomas received the chamber’s highest honors for the year. Keene Community Achiever of the Year and Al Thomas Business Person of the Year.

Forty Years Ago

Beak Consultants Inc. of Portland has been selected to carry out the initial studies for the

Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Program for Mount Tolman Project.

Studies analyzing feasibility of enlarging the Grand Coulee Dam Third Power Plant are now complete.

Stores in the shopping center at Coulee Dam have a rather succinct message for shoppers. It reads – Spokane is 90 icy miles away BRRR.

Selected as student of the month is Lynn Miner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Miner of Coulee Dam.

Fifty Years Ago

Benny and Dorothy Zlateff, owners and operators of the Coulee Bowl Bowling Lanes located in the new Community Center in Coulee Dam have announced that open bowling will begin Friday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m.

Congressman Tom Foley said that the 1970 fiscal year budget proposed by the president

includes nearly $47 million for water and power projects in north central Washington.
