Theater, pool needed, but more is being offered

In response to the “Jess, Shut Up!” column in the October 3 Star newspaper, I am in agreement with Jesse in his wish to

gain funding to reopen the theater and a pool. I disagree with him, however, when he states that the only two events in the area for kids are Koulee Kids Fest and Colorama.

In 2018, the Chamber of Commerce hosted 15 events featuring kids’ activities. Our Triple Fish Challenge in April has a youth class and has seen double-digit growth year over year for the last four years. Colorama now has not only a popular carnival, but also a 5K Color Fun Run; this year over 60 kids participated in that event. At June’s Koulee Kids Fest, 150 kids participated in various activities at 14 different local businesses, all organized by the Chamber and sponsored by businesses.

They were also treated to a juggling, unicycle-riding, lasso-artist cowboy variety show.

During our weekly Market in the Park that ran for 10 weeks during July, August and September, each Wednesday the Chamber organized, and local businesses sponsored, supervised craft activities at North Dam Park. We had an average of 50-100 kids show up each week to participate.

And our just-completed Harvest Festival offered a wide variety of crafts for kids.

I would like to add that, except for the Color Run, all of these activities are FREE to kids, and are typically sponsored by local businesses. There’s always more we as a community could do, but we think that local businesses and the Chamber are giving it a pretty good effort!
