The Lady Raiders lost their soccer season opener Sept. 6 to the Bridgeport Fillies, on the Fillies’ home field, 5-1.

Head Coach Casey Moore said it was a “tough loss.”

“Overall, the entire team played very well,” Moore said. “Key improvements included communication, passing, and defense.”

Sophomore Bryn Chaffee scored the only goal for Lake Roosevelt off an assist from Ravina Pakootas, who “brought the ball to mid-field from the defensive line and passed it to Bryn, who dribbled through three defenders to score a perfectly placed shot,” as Moore described.

“Despite only having two subs, the team worked hard the entire game and many players showed impressive footwork,” Moore said.

Moore highlighted some of her players’ performances.

“RaineyDawn Vargas-Thomas had an amazing defensive save right on the goal line,” she said. “In the first half, new goalkeeper, sophomore Lacey Moon, had five saves. In the second half, senior goalie Chelsea Timentwa also blocked five shots. Senior Vesta Martin had one near goal and the two standout midfielders this game were freshman Sadie Trotter, and junior Hailey Whalawitsa. Senior Captain Olivia Antone exemplified hustle throughout the game.”

“Although LR lost,” she added, “they left the field proud of their efforts and excited to have an opportunity to play Bridgeport with a full roster and more experience later in the season.”

The soccer team played against Manson yesterday, results of which will be reported next week.

Their next game is on Thursday, Sept. 13, in Brewster, where they’ll play the Lady Bears at 4:30 p.m.

Their next home game is on Sept. 18, when they’ll play the Tonasket Lady Tigers at 4:30 on the field in Grand Coulee.
