Larry Jordan announced this week that the Nespelem All-Indian basketball tournament has been canceled for this year.

Town to open bids on trail

Bids will be opened at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) on the Elmer City recreation trail, officials stated. The opening will be at town hall. The $250,000 project was funded by the state Transportation Improvement Board. The grant will pay for both the engineer and construction cost. The trail system, a paved system for both walkers and bicyclists, will be along the Lower River Road for about 2,400 feet, with two crosswalks for access to the Downriver Trail along the Columbia River. If the town receives a successful bid, the work will be done this spring.

Man asks for tree law changes

A man who has found himself stymied in his goal to get rid of a city-owned tree requested changes to Coulee Dam’s tree law last week at the city council meeting.

Bruce Bartoo handed the council copies of the ordinance with his suggested changes, which included eliminating the “tree board” and folding its duties into the Park and Natural Resources Board.

City will ask for bids on old fire truck

Coulee Dam has declared an old fire truck as surplus but hasn’t yet sold it. The 1968 truck sitting just outside the town council’s meeting room elicited concern from Councilmember Fred Netzel, who worried that it was now sitting outside exposed to the elements.

The city will soon accept bids on the old truck.

Commissioners seek mosquito district trustees

The Grant County Board of Commissioners announced Monday that they are looking for interested citizens of Grant County to serve on the Grant County Mosquito Control District #2 Board of Trustees.

Board members “take all necessary or proper steps for the extermination of mosquitoes” and provide financial oversight, a release from commissioners explained, but they don’t participate in daily operations.

There is no compensation for serving on this Board, but necessary expenses for actual traveling in connection with meetings or business of the Board may be allowed and paid.

An application must be completed and can be found at http://www.grantcountywa.gov under the “Request for Volunteers” heading. For further information, please contact the County Commissioners Office at 509-754-2011 ext. 2931. Applications will be accepted until February 23, 2018.

The term is two years, and the citizen must reside within the Mosquito District (City of Electric City, City of Grand Coulee, and outlying areas along Banks Lake). The board meets monthly.
