Lady Raiders lose two, prepare for league play

Sophomore Olivia Ludwig gets one past a Brewster player.

The Lady Raiders lost one volleyball match at home and one on the road, but are looking forward to league play, which starts this week.

Lake Roosevelt played last Tuesday against Brewster at home, losing three games to one.

"Brewster's young team proved to be very poised throughout the evening," said LR Head Coach Kasey Garvin.

The Raiders were able to win the second set, despite losing senior outside hitter Aiyanna Picard to a sprained wrist. The match was tied 1-1, but from there the Raiders couldn't quite get back into a rhythm.

"My bench did a good job of coming in when needed, but we fell completely apart in the fourth set," Garvin said. "We just couldn't get a pass past the 10-foot line."

Yet there were still some highlights that night from the young Raider athletes.

"Sean Garvin showed her athleticism throughout the evening with some spectacular saves and digs," the coach said. "Addison Hansen had three beautiful solo blocks and assisted in two others for the evening."

The girls also lost 3-0 in Soap Lake Thursday, finishing their non-league games with a 3-5 win-loss record.

The Raider highlight of that game against the Eagles was Mikaylah Thompson's serving of nine aces throughout the night.

The girls move on to league play this week, when the games will really start to count. The coach and her team are looking forward to all the rematches of the league games.

"The first go-round of the non-league games identified what things the girls need to work on," Coach Garvin said. "We have a well-rounded team; we have a quality setter and hitters to complement that. Serving is usually our strongest asset, and I'm looking to capitalize more on that. We need to improve our passing if we want to start running a more diversified offense."

The girls were scheduled to play the Fillies last night (Tuesday) in Bridgeport and will host the undefeated Manson Trojans at home on Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Gailord Nelson Gym.
