80 years

The Moose Lodge will celebrate its 80th anniversary Saturday, June 25, with a potluck dinner from 4-7 p.m. The dinner will be followed by live music from 7-11 p.m.

Potentially cool deal

Three air-conditioning units now servicing city hall in Electric City, which will soon be replaced, have been declared surplus by the city council. Anyone interested in acquiring them can contact city hall.

A Navy brass quartet will give a 45-minute concert just before the Laser Light Show Sunday, June 26, beginning at 9 p.m. The open-air concert will be performed in front of the seating area at the Visitor Center and has been arranged by officials of the Bureau of Reclamation.

Huge tanker

If you saw a huge aircraft flying low over the Colville Indian Reservation, you likely saw the world’s largest supertanker aircraft and crews practicing in a firefighting training exercise.

Global Supertanker Services scheduled flights over the Keller Butte area Saturday with a Boeing 747 tanker to practice flying in a mountainous area in advance of the coming fire season.

The supertanker can carry 19,600 gallons of water, retardant or gel, or a mixed load of two of those, and drop it from about 200 to 500 feet up. It can drop in multiple areas with the same load, but can also cover almost 2 miles in about 15 seconds. It would take 25 small firefighting planes to carry a similar payload, according to company statistics.

Global alerted authorities to the practice runs last week, and flew out of Moses Lake.

Barbecue set for

fund-raiser

“Pig in the Park” will be held this year on Saturday, Sept. 10., in the park-like area behind city hall in Electric City. The community BBQ picnic raises funds for the development of the city’s newest park, behind the fire hall. The Whitelaw brothers, Dave and John, will again be in charge of preparing the meat for the occasion. Last year’s picnic raised about $2,500 toward development of the park.
