Tyler Palmer, a fifth-grader at Grand Coulee Dam Middle School, won the SHARP Kids writing contest with his story about a time machine.
Over the last eight weeks, students were asked to write a story on a topic picked for them. Entries were to follow the basics of creative writing — setting, character, problem and resolution — and judging included points for spelling, punctuation and creative thinking.
Palmer’s entry, the winner among 20, is to the right.
"Back to the Future"
By Tyler Palmer
Once upon a time there was a boy named Tyler and his grandfather had told him a story about a time machine. He also told him how it worked, just in case he ever ran into it. So one day, years later, Tyler’s class had a field trip to the museum. During the tour they saw dinosaur bones, knights armor and other old things. Then they came upon a time machine. Tyler asked his teacher, Miss G, if he could go to the bathroom. He then acted like he was going to the room. When the whole class went around the corner he dashed to the time machine. He quickly climbed inside.
In the back of the machine sat a witch, unnoticed by Tyler. He did notice a cat though in the front. He bent over to pet it. When he did, the door slammed shut with a BOOM. So Tyler did what his grandfather said to do in the story. Turn that knob, flip that switch and press a button. Then with the roar of a lion, it traveled to the future.
The time machine arrived. The door slowly creaked open. As soon as it was open the witch flew out of her hiding spot, carrying her broom. The witch immediately started destroying the world, starting with the city the machine had landed in. The cat jumped from the machine and after Tyler did. The witch then turned to the cat and somehow zapped it and turned it into a monster. She must have hypnotized it to attack, too, because it ran towards Tyler. With an I’m going to kill you look in its eyes.
So Tyler slipped back in the time machine. He repeated the procedure in reverse and traveled back to the museum. When he got back, the class was there waiting for him. Miss G asked “Where were you?” Tyler answered her, “I went to the future and a witch is destroying the world there.” So the whole class crowded into the machine, including Miss G, and headed to the future.
When they got there, they noticed the cat monster was sleeping but the witch was not and was waiting for them. Half of the class immediately disappeared and were missing. Then we heard screaming and yelling. We looked around and noticed a hole in the ground. When we looked into the deep hole the witch swooped down and pushed Tyler, Miss G, Aleeka and Chelsea down the hole. When they landed, and after brushing themselves off, they noticed a strange looking door. On the other side of the door was the missing half of the class. When Tyler’s small group went through the door a cage fell down on the rest of the class, just missing Tyler’s group. The floor started to rise under them all. It quickly stopped at the top of the building. The witch was there but she did not see that she had not caught Tyler, Miss G, Aleeka or Chelsea in her trap. They saw a ladder nearby that led to where the kids were being held hostage. They got up to the kids and were able to release half of the kids but the witch noticed and grabbed Aleeka and Miss G. She started to fly off with them. The witch turned and zapped the cat again. At that moment Aleeka fell off the broom, screaming. Miss G quickly grabbed Aleeka’s hand before it was too late. Miss G held on with all her strength as the class just stared from below. Tyler quickly jumped to action; he saw this was his only chance. He ran to the other building, got to the edge of the roof and jumped. Landing on the broom and with all his might, he pushed the witch off of the broom. The witch crashed down where the other students were standing. They trapped the witch with her own cage. They all then returned to the time machine and took the witch back to our time to put her in the jail the rest of her life.
The End.
