Correction

In the May 29 Coulee Recollections, we unknowingly repeated an error originally made 10 years ago. The class speaker for the class of 1953 at Coulee Dam High School was Josef Gray, but his first name had been incorrectly written in the column 10 years ago as Josie. Thanks to class Salutatorian Donna Smith Cunning, who caught the error and notes that he was known all through high school as Joe Gray, and that he eventually became president of SeaFirst Bank.

Ten Years Ago

The saying “Good things come to those who wait,” could apply to 79-year-old Raymond Wans. After all, it took the World War II veteran 62 years to get his high school diploma. Last Saturday, he entered the graduation ceremony as the first at LRHS to receive his diploma through the state’s Operation Recognition, a program giving World War II veterans honorary high school diplomas.

A Lake Roosevelt High School student roped in the highest award for a state high school rodeo participant recently. Shane Proctor took the title of all-around champion at the state’s high school rodeo championship in Ellensburg May 29 - June 1.

Morgan’s Musings - Sunday, June 14, is Flag Day. The VFW has issued a booklet, entitled “Etiquette of the Stars and Stripes,” which tells and shows how, when and where to fly the colors. The booklet is available through http://www.vfw.com.

A Lake Roosevelt High School junior has qualified to join some of the state’s best wrestlers to compete at a national tournament in July. Kerry Green Jr. will travel to Fargo, N.D., as part of the Washington State Wrestling Junior National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Team.

Twenty Years Ago

Diplomas were conferred to 58 seniors during commencement exercises for Lake Roosevelt High School Class of 1993 last Friday evening. The graduating class was one of the smallest in years, numbering 44 students fewer than last year’s graduating class.

Earning ribbons at the 1993 Washington State Special Olympics Summer Games this past weekend included Justin White, Gina Matt and Jaimi Smith.

Students participating in the Music May Festival at Pacific University camp included Jennifer Bonertz, Lloyd Gibson Jr., Amanda King, Emily King, Brann Marshal and Jeremy Hansen.

Thirty Years Ago

Winners in the Banks Lake Spiney Ray Kids’ Fishing Derby included Tyson Siegert, Shany Ayling, Carla Whitaker and Terry Shinkle.

New officers for the Federated Women’s Club include president Josie Esau, vice president Zay Weaver, secretary Dottie Nessett and treasurer Helen Wilbor.

Johnson Video Service is now offering home video television movies to the Grand Coulee Dam Area. The video service offers color/sound television pictures of family events. The home business is owned and operated by Leon and Tina Johnson of Electric City.

Forty Years Ago

Tommy Davis of the VFW team was the first place winner in the recent ticket sales for the Little League with $235 sold. Second and third place winners were Dave Thornton and Joe Goodwin.

Lieutenant Tim Wapato, a 15 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Dept., has arrived to assume the duties of the Chief of Police, Colville Tribal Police.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Williams entertained at an open house Sunday afternoon in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Williams of Coulee Dam.

Lori Clayton of Grand Coulee caught her first fish ever on Banks Lake Sunday, a 17” rainbow trout.

Fifty Years Ago

The Associated Public Works projects of the Coulee Dam National Recreation area are rapidly reaching completion.

Etheta Anderson of Grand Coulee is the winner of a $50 conservation education scholarship through Natural Resources Forum of Washington.

Columbia School held graduation last Wednesday with 40 boys and girls in the graduating class. Eight of them started kindergarten together.

Sixty Years Ago

Work is under way at the park site on the equalizing reservoir.

Richard Stiles of Coulee Dam received his degree as doctor of medicine from Northwestern University.

Newly elected officers of the American Legion #131 of Coulee Dam are president Maxine Crawford, vice president Annette Weil, second vice president Betty Hillas, secretary Doris Skorheim, treasurer Bea Heathershaw, chaplain Sally Johnson, historian Ruth Strock and sergeant at arms Mary Cummings.

John F. Michaud became the mayor of Elmer City Thursday night at the meeting of the council.
