Ten Years Ago

A painting depicting American military history hangs in the Veterans of Foreign Wars center mainly due to hours of volunteer labor from two local women and a local veteran. Columbia Art Association members Darlene Morova and Edith Lael spent about 150 hours over the last year painting a mural depicting American military involvement in World War I and II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Desert Storm and the present day military.

Airplane models fill the home of an Electric City man, who restarted his childhood hobby several years ago through encouragement from a pioneering glider design. Milan Lawrence said he built his first plane about 10 years ago following a letter of advice from the designer of a motor-powered glider whom he talked to several times.

Hiking Steamboat Rock or parking a car at Osborne Bay will now cost a little money in an effort by the State Parks and Recreation Commission to maintain parks.

Twenty Years Ago

Selected as the 1992 Volunteer of the Year was Sid Saunders.

There is so much snow that it has to go somewhere. Grand Coulee workers found a place for some of the snow closing off part of a street to pile it up; the steepest part of Main Street.

Bird counters tallied up 2,619 individual birds of 57 different species during the Grand Coulee Christmas Bird Count Dec. 20. The count was down from last year’s numbers of 63 species and 7,086 birds.

Dr. Robert Skordas, a 1986 Palmer graduate will be accepting patients at Columbia Chiropractic Center.

Local football fans might see a familiar face if they watch the Independence Bowl Thursday. Perhaps they will get a glimpse of former Lake Roosevelt High School player Rob Williams who is now a member of the University of Oregon football team.

Thirty Years Ago

The employees of Grand Coulee Dam Project have received performance awards for their outstanding work at the Bureau of Reclamation. Carol Oldroyd was recognized for her exceptional work accomplishment as a budget analyst in the Program’s Office. Rick Parker of Delano also received a special achievement award for his valuable initiative and problem solving in the project’s Maintenance Division.

The Raiders’ long road trip to Cashmere last week once again resulted in defeat for both varsity and junior varsity. The varsity lost 54 to 62.

Forty Years Ago

Linda Quinton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brant Quinton of Grand Coulee was winner of the Voice of Democracy Contest at Lake Roosevelt High School.

Richard Crawford has been promoted to Cadet First Lieutenant in the EWSC Reserve Officers Training Corps program.

Fifty Years Ago

In Coulee Dam the winners of the outdoor Christmas Decorations were: Herb Dailey 1st, Roy Peterman 2nd and John Romero 3rd. Honorable mention went to Bill Miller and Dean Klaas.

Down at Koontzville motorists on the highway were asked to drive carefully because a colony of beavers living on the river were crossing the road to cut trees on the Albert Carlson property.

Sixty Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Hart of Moses Lake have announced the engagement of their daughter Delores to LaVerne Warner, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Warner of Grand Coulee. Both are graduates of Grand Coulee High School and are employed at Moses Lake.

New officers selected for Grand Coulee Ridge Riders Club were: Cletis Laacy, president; Buck Cook, second vice president; Lois McClain, secretary; Rebecca Canacy, treasurer. Trustees are Hayden McKee, Roy Rinker, Minneta Kelso and Roy Childs.

Albert Orr, Pete Lemery, Ike Patrick and Lou Runnels of Nespelem returned December 10 from Portland where they attended an FBI school.
