Grand Coulee Dam American Legion Post 157 is one of five legion posts in the state to receive a “Recognition of Post Excellence” from the national organization.

The award came out of the recent national convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was given because of the local post’s efforts in four general areas. The criteria for the national award includes: 1) Membership results; 2) Youth activity; 3) Community Service; and 4) Service to troops and veterans.

The citation reads: “Grand Coulee Dam Post 157 has demonstrated excellence in serving their community, above and beyond all expectations. In keeping with the aims of our preamble, this post and its members have displayed exemplary efforts through their devotion to mutual helpfulness.”

The citation continued: “Their allegiance to helping veterans is exemplary ... and the American Legion presents this certificate in appreciation to this post’s unselfish duty, devotion, and compassion towards their fellow men and women.”

The certificate is signed by National Commander Fang A. Wong and National Adjutant Daniel S. Wheeler.

Post Commander Chuck Henspeter said that legion members had everything to do with the award.

“The membership has been active in the community and taken a leadership role,” Henspeter stated.

He said he plans to step down as commander and that later this month Cindy Jayne, a former Navy chief, residing in Coulee Dam, will become the new local post commander.
