Tristen Daniels was introduced Monday as the new head coach for Lake Roosevelt softball after a hard week of improvement and growth. The week started with a home game April 2 against Brewster when the Lady Raiders lost 30-4. Because of spring break several of the girls had left with their families, leaving the interim coaches with holes to fill for Thursday's doubleheader against Brewster. In a make-up doubleheader at Brewster last Thursday, the Raider bats came alive to take both games from the Bears. It was a turn around from last Monday’s 8-2 loss to the same team. In the first game, Brady Black stayed on the mound for six innings, racking up three strikeouts and holding the Bears to two hits, allowing only one earned run. Locals prevailed in mixed martial arts matches held at the Nespelem Community Center Saturday night in an event billed as “Rez Cage Wars”. The event featured six adult MMA matches and one youth grappling (no boxing) match. Lake Roosevelt baseball was washed out with last week’s rain, but was back in action on Monday for the first makeup game of the series against Brewster. The Raiders will travel to Brewster on Tuesday for a double header that was cancelled on Saturday. The game on Monday at Greene Field was the first loss for the Raiders in the 2012 season. Raider track is still shifting people around to find the best competitive mix. At Cashmere last Friday, for instance, speedster Nick Gleason threw shot put and distance man Oscar Pakootas tried his hand at the 100-meter dash. Tanecia Stanczak and Drew Desautel led the way for the Raiders at Desert Canyon Golf Club in last Wednesday’s match against Waterville, Columbia Basin Secondary, Moses Lake Christian, and Omak. Stanczak, for the second week, outclassed her opponets to breeze to a 51-stroke score on nine holes. Head Coach Steve Files thought Stanczak’s performance was “stellar” on the greens, which helped to distance her from the rest of the competition. With the wet weather, the Raider tennis squad was only able to play one of three matches scheduled for last week, and that match was a makeup for a previous weather cancellation. At Omak March 26, the Pioneers roughed up the Raiders on the whole. The only win for the Raiders came in boys’ singles action as Hayden Rodrigues defeated Cody Smith in convincing form, 8-1. The Lady Raiders series against Brewster last week had the misfortune to be rained out not only at home on Tuesday, but also on Saturday at Brewster for the doubleheader. Raider baseball swept Okanogan at Greene Field on Saturday by scores of 9 to 6 in both games of the doubleheader. Kim Barry, Miranda Salas, and Katelynn Schilling all placed as the girls’ team finished 10th at the 38-school Ray Cross Invitational at Ephrata High School last Saturday. Barry took home third in the 800-meter run, with a time of two minutes, 30 seconds; sixth in the 1600 at 5:45; sixth in the 3200 in 12:36, and pole vaulted for fifth, clearing 7 feet, 6 inches. Raider tennis players won matches last week with the boys winning all three and the girls slowly improving as the week progressed. At White Swan March 20, the boys won the match 3-2, with Phoenix Shepard, Hayden Rodrigues, and Nick Rice sweeping the singles matches in favor of the Raiders. Shepard dispatched Xavier Valladares, 6-3 and 6-0. Rodrigues trounced Armondo Cervantes of White Swan 6-1, 6-3. Junior Tanecia Stanczak and Freshmen Austin Rosenbaum both medalled at Lake Chelan Golf Course last Thursday in the opening match of the season for the Raiders. The Raider boys’ team competed against Manson, Waterville, and Entiat, while Stanczak competed against the other girls as an individual as there were not enough girls to form a squad for any of the schools present. After the confusion of having their head coach quit and the original opener with Cashmere postponed, the Lady Raiders opened at home under interim Head Coach Kevin Rosenbaum against the always-tough Okanogan Bulldogs, losing 30-4 Thursday at home. LR out-hit Tonasket 23-1 en route to a doubleheader victory over the visiting Tigers last Saturday at Greene Field. In the first game, every Raider who came to bat not only got on base, but also scored a run. Lake Roosevelt High School’s head softball coach resigned Monday, leaving the team’s first game of the season, scheduled for Thursday, uncertain. Athletic Director Rich Black said the resignation came as a surprise to him, and noted that, from his perspective, there had been no reason for coach Flint Bjorson to step down. “Flint has some personal concerns that convinced him that he could no longer perform in the capacity of head softball coach,” Black said. On a day that was cold, windy, and had some moments of freezing rain, Raider track opened the 2012 season at West Valley High School last Saturday. Raider baseball enters the 2012 season returning nine players from last year’s 14-5 squad and hopes to have more of the same success this season. With the recent closure of the Banks Lake golf club, many members of the community questioned whether Lake Roosevelt High School would have a golf team this spring. Fourteen returners, including three participants of the 2011 state track-and-field tournament, bring optimism to Raider Track for the 2012 season. Raider Tennis enters the 2012 season with 20 participants, including one from Almira-Coulee-Hartline and 14 returners from the 2011 squad. This season’s team is senior heavy with eight turning out, five of whom have played all four years. The rest of the squad is made up of four juniors, five sophomores, and two freshmen.
