The school board, Monday night, finally agreed to next year’s calendar after nearly an hour-long discussion that ended only when Superintendent Dennis Carlson recommended one of two options before the board. Lake Roosevelt High School announced its 10th Gates Millennium Scholar this week. Winning a free ride to a university of choice was Matt Timentwa, a Nespelem resident, who has attended school here since kindergarten. Timentwa’s specialty is math and science. Work is going on -- most of it behind the scenes -- on the new school project. Chief architect Laurence Rose said last week that his firm, Design West, from Pullman, is reviewing all of the information it has accumulated to lay the proper groundwork to finish drawings for the project. Accordingly, he has called a meeting of the community planning group to get together this Thursday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the district office in an effort to fine-tune the planning on the K-12 project. SHARP Kids will team up with National Park Service Ranger Janice Elvidge Monday night, when she offers “Constellation Connections,” a classroom program that teaches students their way around the night sky. The program meets state learning requirements for earth and space science for students in fourth through eighth grades. Kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school year is now open for all children entering kindergarten next year. Screening Days - Thursday and Friday, April 19 and 20. All registered students will be screened during this time, which will include vision, hearing and communication. Two veteran school employees, Charlene Tracy and George Davis, are retiring or taking new positions. The school board March 26 accepted Tracy's retirement request. She has been with the district for 28 years, and served in three schools. She said Tuesday that she planned to travel with her husband who retired last year. A committee of local alumni has been formed to plan an all school reunion for all who attended the Grand Coulee Schools. The plan so far is to have a potluck picnic at the windmill park at North Dam on Sat , August 18, from noon until all are tired of talking and remembering. All individual classes are responsible for arranging the Friday night, August 17, festivities.
