    Do you need to improve your basic skills or get your GED certificate so you can get that better job or go to college? Have you started but not finished taking your tests? This fall is the time to prepare for your GED exam, especially if you’ve already started taking the series of exams. You must finish by December 2013. In January 2014, a new GED test will be used and any tests completed using the old series will not count towards a GED. GED classes are offered locally through Big Bend Community College.     Students will get a better understanding of the effects of bullying, acts of violence and negativity when all three district schools hear presentations of “Rachel’s Challenge” next week. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine School shootings in 1999.   • Mansker chosen for scholarship

    Alissa Mansker of Grand Coulee, attending Washington State University, is among 28 students in the state to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Washington State Employees Credit Union, the group announced last week.     The SHARP Kids program announced that morning and after-school programs will start Tuesday Aug. 28.   • GED testing fees to double

    The cost of getting a GED will double starting in October, according to Big Bend Community College officials. The testing fees will increase from $75 to $150 for the certification, said Sandy Cheek, director of Basic Skills at BBCC. If students start their GED testing before Oct. 1, they will be charged only the current $75 fee, regardless of whether they complete the tests by that date, Cheek said.     This year, students at Lake Roosevelt High School will be participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge as part of Raider Robotics. FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a competition that uses sports models and engineering principles to create a robot that is prepared to compete throughout the school year. Each robot is made up of aluminum parts that allow team members to add sensor kits, larger wheels, 4 DC motors, and Lego parts.   • Surplus sales bring district cash

    by Roger S. Lucas The Grand Coulee Dam School District’s surplus and garage sale has netted some $11,336.24, Superintendent Dennis Carlson told the board Monday night. Two sales made up the bulk of the money with the disposal of two portable classroom buildings at A.E. Wright Elementary School, and a bus purchased by a Utah sheriff. The portables, 24 by 36 feet, were purchased by the Colville Indian College at the agency, for $3,600. The bus, estimated to have a $750 trade-in value, was purchased for $5,400.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District will enter a two-year “guaranteed education” pilot project beginning with the senior graduating class of 2014. Superintendent Dennis Carlson has been talking about the idea for some time and last Wednesday asked the board to embark on a two-year pilot project to which the board readily agreed.
