Learning and fun combined The school board Monday night approved a field trip request from SHARP Kids and Summer Rocks to go to Moses Lake. The trip will include a stop at a pea farm, and at Soap Lake to conclude a unit on water testing. While at Moses Lake, the group will stop over at the Moses Lake Surf’n Slide park for two hours of swimming. The trip is planned for Aug. 1. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved a number of hires at its Monday night meeting. Anne Cain, from Monitor, Wash., was hired as a third kindergarten teacher. Karmen Cecil, who taught fifth grade last year in the middle school, was hired as a developmental preschool teacher. Andrea Sperberg, from Spanaway, was hired as counselor at Lake Roosevelt High School. The Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association has awarded their 2013 scholarships in the amount of $500 each to Andrew McClure and Hillary Carriere, Lake Roosevelt High School graduating seniors. Andrew wants to become an architect and will attend Walla Walla Community College in the fall, and later plans to pursue his degree at WSU. Hillary’s choice for continuing her education is Pacific Lutheran University where she will study to become a registered nurse and hopes eventually to become a nurse practitioner. The school board approved the hire of a new English teacher at Lake Roosevelt High School at its special meeting last Wednesday night. Hired was Brian Daniels, of Fort Worth, Texas. The Grand Coulee Dam School District last week announced the sponsorship of a Simplified Summer Food Program for Children. Meals will be made available at no charge to attending children 18 years of age and younger. Meals will be served at Center School, 317 Spokane Way, Grand Coulee, from July 1-Aug. 1, Monday-Thursday only. There will be no service on July 4. Meals to be served include breakfast, between 8:30-9:00 a.m; and lunch, served between 12-12:30 p.m. All meals must be eaten on site.... Full story

Matt Simpson of Brookings, Ore., was hired as a physical education/weight training teacher at Lake Roosevelt High School. Simpson was also hired as boys’ head basketball coach for LRHS. Johnny Medina-McCraigie is the 2013 recipient of the $500 scholarship awarded by local Chapter DG of P.E.O. International. It looks like the school district will have a large kindergarten class next fall. Center School Principal Lisa Lakin reported to the school board that 45 kindergarten students had already been signed and usually at this time only about 20 are signed up. The school board approved the district’s new technology plan and was told that the district has 400 computers tied to the internet. Thirty-eight students from five area high schools formally committed to the Upward Bound program during an induction ceremony at Big Bend Community College on April 23. Mostly high school freshmen, they started a journey to college in front of family and friends.
