Nathan Fulton retrieves a rocket after it was launched during Nespelem School's day of rocketry Friday. Science teacher Ralph Rise organized the day and had help from Washington State University personnel. Students from Coulee Dam and Paschal Sherman Indian School also attended, building and firing rockets. Rise put together a similar event at Lake Roosevelt Schools a year ago, aimed at firing imaginations and interest in science, as well as rockets....

The Grand Coulee Dam School District board last Thursday evening made a number of hires and accepted five resignations. Hired were Madisyn Byam as 2016 SHARP Kids program leader; Melanie Herndon as LAP paraprofessional; and Jeremy Crollard as assistant boy’s basketball coach. Nespelem Elementary School’s board of directors saw new uniforms introduced at their meeting Sept. 21, which had been moved ahead from Sept. 26 so that Superintendent Rich Stewart could attend an Impact Aid conference in Washington D.C. Principal Debra Pankey told the board that two Nespelem students are taking algebra at the school through the Spokane Virtual Academy. Anyone who ever went to, or worked at, Grand Coulee Schools is invited to an “All School Reunion” Friday and Saturday, August 12-13. At 7 p.m. Friday, alumni will get together at North Dam Park for visiting and for renewing old friendships, bringing their own drinks, snacks, and chairs. The Grand Coulee Dam School District hired a dean of students and a new athletic director at Monday night’s board meeting. Dean of students at Lake Roosevelt High School for the next school term will be Charles Pierce, from Soap Lake. Pierce will be in his final year for his principal certification at Whitworth College during the 2016-17 term. When students return to school this fall they will see six huge abstract paintings hanging in their school. The paintings, by Portland artist Lucinda Parker, feature two birds or fish in an abstract setting, with sayings painted on the frames. It will be a lesson, of sorts, to not only enjoy the painting but to understand and develop the meaning of the paintings. The Grand Coulee Dam School District will pay more than $400,000 a year for services ranging from information technology management to bookkeeping under a contract approved in June. The disctrict board approved a $406,618 service agreement with the North Central ESD (Education Service District) for the 2016-17 school year at its June 27 meeting. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board hired a secondary science teacher Monday to replace veteran Ralph Rise. Hired was Mark Vinciguerra, 46, who taught this past school year in the Hoquiam School District. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Pacific Lutheran University. Vinciguerra also has taught science in the Olympia School District. Rise, a 33-year veteran teacher in the Grand Coulee Dam School District, has taken a teaching position with Nespelem School.... Five of six administration positions in the Grand Coulee Dam school system will change for the new school year. Superintendent Dr. Dennis Carlson concludes his six years here June 30, and is being replaced by Paul Turner. Turner was hired by the board to follow Carlson this spring, after it was learned Carlson planned to retire. Lucinda Parker, an abstract artist from Portland, Oregon, was here June 21 as six of her paintings were hung at various places in the Lake Roosevelt school building. Two of the 5-foot by 9-foot paintings went up in each cafeteria, and one in each of the main stairwells. The P.E.O. awarded a $2,500 STAR Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year to Andrea Olson, a senior at Almira/Coulee- Hartline High School. The STAR Scholarship was awarded to 400 high school seniors from a pool of 1,933 applicants nationwide. Olson is the daughter of Robert and Amber Olson and was recommended for the scholarship by Chapter DG of Coulee Dam. The Grand Coulee Alumni Association May 18 finalized plans for an all-school reunion and awarded more than double the number of scholarships they have in recent years. The all-school reunion will start Friday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m., and continue with a potluck on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Scholarship applications were read with the purpose of selecting one male and one female student of Lake Roosevelt High School to receive the two $500 scholarships normally awarded by the alumni association. OLYMPIA, Wash. — Higher education officials Monday announced two new agreements aimed at giving future community and technical college transfer students a jump start on bachelor’s degrees in computer science or music. The new “major related programs” are specialized versions of Washington’s decades-long direct transfer agreement, which allows students to finish the first two years of their bachelor’s degrees at a community or technical college and then transfer as juniors.
