Renowned Native American artist and politician Enoch Kelly Haney visited students in grades six through 12 from Nespelem Elementary School and Lake Roosevelt High School in the LR gym on Thursday. Bert Smith, a Coulee Dam High School alumnus, had introduced Haney to Kim Stanger, the Indian Education director at Lake Roosevelt, who helped organize the event. The school boards from the Grand Coulee Dam District and Nespelem District met recently and focused their discussions on the calendars for the next two school years. As a new approach to setting the school calendar, Grand Coulee Dam District Superintendent Paul Turner opted to present a two-year calendar plan to the respective boards. Turner reviewed it with his own board in February and board Chair Joette Barry requested a review with Nespelem before passage. • Members of the Lake Roosevelt junior and senior high bands and the high school chorus will head to Silverwood Theme Park June 1, for a field trip performance. Karen Pace, who heads the music department, stated that about 75 students will go on the trip. Curriculum, students, and staff received the most comments from a recent Lake Roosevelt School survey that was made available to patrons in the area. The survey was taken to provide some guidance to a team of school district personnel and local residents who work together in developing information for a Strategic Plan that will shape school activity for the next few years. Missoula Children’s Theatre will be in town again April 24–29, and auditions for young actors for “Treasure Island” will start at 4 p.m. April 24 at the Village Cinema in Coulee Dam. Washington State University’s President’s Honor Roll for the 2016 Fall semester included three students from Coulee Dam. Listed were Scott Abrahamson, Devan Black and Kayley Duclos. The honor roll recognizes students who stand above the rest with excellent academic performance. To be eligible for the honor roll, undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of nine graded hours in a single term at WSU and earn a grade point average of 3.75, or earn a 3.50 cumulative GPA based on 15 cumulative hours of graded work.... For eight weeks in November and December, this group of six girls earned a NASA diploma by working on special science curriculum designed by NASA around the International Space Station program. They learned about different types of sciences involved in the ISS. Each week the students were assigned a different mission. A cafeteria at Lake Roosevelt Schools roared to life with music, lights, and dancing last this month as more than 75 percent of the classes of 2021 and 2022 attended the dance. As students began jamming to the music, seventh-grader Reniff Herndon took a broom to the floor as an impromptu partner at the Jan. 20 dance in the elementary cafeteria. Yes, the Grand Coulee Dam School District does have a superintendent! A glitch when Paul Turner took over the superintendent position last August was fixed by the school board Monday night. It was one of those things where someone forgot to cross a “t” which prevented Turner’s name from turning up in county records listed as superintendent. Now it’s fixed and Turner, who had served as a vice principal, can now sign his title as “superintendent” without anyone having the license to challenge it. Connor Crim, Jordon Dewinkler, and Samantha Turner, all of Coulee Dam, made the Eastern Washington University’s Dean’s List for the 2016 fall quarter, the school announced this week. An undergraduate student who earns 12 quality hours and receives a GPA of 3.5 or better is placed on the Dean’s List for the quarter.... Full story

The Grand Coulee Dam School District board accepted one resignation and made four hires at its meeting Monday night. Resigning was Loren Endsley as junior high assistant wrestling coach. Hired were Kacey Prindle, assistant leader for fourth- and fifth-grade SHARP Kids; Brad Oliver, JV boys’ basketball coach; Brandi Hansen, seventh-grade girls’ basketball coach; and Deidre Ellsworth, eighth-grade girls’ basketball coach.
