Nespelem School District is searching for a new principal and superintendant after accepting the resignation last week of John Adkins. Adkins has held that office for five years. He has accepted the superintendent job at Wellpinit School District on the Spokane Indian Reservation, which serves about 500 students. More management changes at CMC Coulee Medical Center announced last week that three people will be leaving the management team. Chief Human Resources Officer Julie Bjorklund, Dietary Manager Grace Heaton and Director of Continuous Improvement Melanie Neddo will all be leaving at the end of the month or early in July. Bjorklund’s work will be absorbed by other HR office staff, Interim Chief Executive Officer Debbie Bigelow said in CMC’s email newsletter. Buyers, many of them with lumps in their throats, flocked to Lake Roosevelt High School's classroom wing Friday and Saturday to pick up items that were on sale in the soon-to-be-demolished structure. Many of those who showed up had been students at the school, and with a tear in the eye, scrambled through the rooms looking for just that right memento. The Grand Coulee Dam School District is working with the town of Coulee Dam in an effort to get a police officer at the new school complex. The “resource officer” would be part of the Coulee Dam police force and his or her assignment would be primarily to schools. School district Superintendent Dennis Carlson stated that Coulee Dam will be seeking a grant that would provide 75 percent of the cost of the officer for the first three years, with the town picking up the other 25 percent of the cost. Work will begin June 23, on a water project that will enable Electric City to provide water service to Sunbanks Lake Resort. The project will provide a 10-inch line from State Street to the entrance of Sunbanks, and then a six-inch line to service water needs within the park. The work is being done now, in spite of it being the high point of the tourist season, because health officials will not allow “The Cantina” restaurant at Sunbanks to operate until the water problem is solved. With two key health care providers working on a very limited basis and revenues limited as a result, Coulee Medical Center is losing money and faces yet another challenge: a physician will leave for a year, starting in January. Grand Coulee is advancing a proposal for law enforcement coverage for Electric City that would triple the price, a proposal that its own police chief hadn’t seen. Chief Mel Hunt took one look at the proposal and stated, “This is the first time I’ve seen this.” The copy of the proposal had been made available to The Star by the city clerk’s office in Electric City. Grand Coulee and Electric City officials will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, to discuss ways they can work together on a walking path that could extend across the causeway south of Electric City and through their two respective cities. The meeting will be held in Grand Coulee's council chambers. Gray & Osborne, the engineering firm for both cities, will also meet in an effort to put together a proposal that would allow them to apply for a grant to help with the expense of creating the path.... Police are still bewildered by a Grand Coulee woman's loss of some 200 South African gold Krugerrand coins. Dorothy Harris told police that an Electric City resident, Steve Kiona, who came to the property to do yard work, called her at work May 30, after discovering that someone had ransacked his dresser drawers in the basement. The federal corporation that sells the town of Coulee Dam its electricity underbilled the town in the past and now wants the municipal utlity to pay up. Coulee Dam’s town council approved a plan Wednesday to pay Bonneville Power Administration for “undercharging” for electric power over the past few years. Mayor Greg Wilder asked the council for its agreement for him to sign off on paying the BPA back some $47,000 for undercharging since 2012 for providing electricity to the town. Firefighters from the Mt. Tolman Fire Center on the Colville Reservation battle a blaze last week that consumed some 700 acres of brush and grass. Fire Management Officer Ike Cawston said they’re still patrolling the area to watch for hot spots. The fire, which burned near Belvedere and along the Columbia River, was reported Wednesday at 8:25 p.m. It burned mostly in grass and sage, but structure protection was called in for the Belvedere area. The owner of Wolf’s Den bar complained to the Grand Coulee City Council last Tuesday night that he is being harassed by police for loud music at his Main Street bar. Ted Wolf told the council that police officer Sean Cook had given his bartender a $250 citation May 30, after responding to two complaints that the music at the bar was too loud. The Coulee Dam Town Hall was filled to capacity last Wednesday as EMTs, firefighters and townspeople pushed back at city officials for taking on the EMTs a week earlier. Those speaking cited numerous times that EMTs had assisted family members and friends when they needed ambulance service. That support was appreciated, but fell a little off the mark. A terse email from Elmer City Mayor Gail Morin to Coulee Dam Mayor Greg Wilder on wastewater treatment billings is raising a stink between the two towns. She wrote, “Thank you for demonstrating Coulee Dam’s imbedded lack of interest in a good faith agreement,” Morin wrote. “We need to look at invoices/receipts after learning that 108 tubes of grease were charged to the plant. Coulee Dam has selected a Spokane firm to do its alternative analysis for the proposed wastewater treatment plant project. Varela & Associates was selected out of nine firms that initially showed interest in the project. That number was narrowed down to six firms and then to three and later to two when one of the finalists opted out. After several years of collaboration, two local school districts will go their own way next year as they seek to augment students’ education with after-school programs. Nespelem’s school board last week voted to follow a different path, leaving the Grand Coulee Dam School District to apply for the next five years of funding for its SHARP Kids program on its own. If you are wondering if the school board will decide to re-roof and re-side the old Lake Roosevelt High School gym, you will have to wait a little longer. Superintendent Dennis Carlson revealed to the board last Wednesday night that it will take about $883,000 to do just that.
