  • City to pay Medstar memberships

    Some 63 people associated with the City of Grand Coulee will get Medstar memberships as a way for the city to say thank you to them. Getting memberships are city staff, elected officials and volunteers. The city council approved the measure at its last meeting, subject to getting an okay from the city’s attorney. City clerk Carol Boyce said this week that Grand Coulee is moving forward with the plan.   • Chamber announces annual award winners

    The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce named its "Achiever of Year" and "Business of the Year" at a special awards luncheon last Thursday at the Moose Lodge. The chamber membership chooses the honorees through a ballot process. The "Achiever of the Year" is Debbie Bigelow, chief executive officer at Coulee Medical Center. Bigelow stepped into the hospital position during a time of turmoil and was instrumental in rebuilding trust and confidence. She recently announced her intent to retire... Full story

  • GCD Yacht Club tears out old docks for new ones

    The Grand Coulee Dam Yacht Club has been working on tearing out its aging docks at Eden Harbor over the last three weeks to make way for new ones. Keith St. Jeor said Friday, while pulling the old docks apart, that the club had determined it made sense to replace them. They were installed in 1981-82. The club has purchased used docks from a Lake Pend Oreille marina that suffered damage in a wind storm. About 10 members drove up there in pickups and trailers to pick them up last August.   • Golf course offering punch card special

    Banks Lake Golf Course is offering a special reduced price through its punch card program this season. Port District 7 officials, who manage the course, said last week that the new punch card program is designed to save golfers money and to encourage people to play the 18-hole course. The punch cards are good for both nine-hole and 18-hole play. Play six times for nine holes, and punch card users will get one free nine-hole play.   • City hall fix up planned

    Electric City will continue to fix up city hall this year. The city plans to paint city hall, add a stone wainscotting, put up a new logo sign and redo the air conditioning system. The city has put $49,000 in this year’s budget for the upgrades and repairs. In past recent years the city has put in carpeting, painted the inside, upgraded its council room, and made other repairs.   • Electric City authorizes parks and recreation planning

    The Electric City council has moved forward on developing a parks and recreation plan for the city. The council authorized city planner Kurt Danison to move forward by voting up to $5,000 to develop the plan. Danison had noted that the development of the plan will include three public meetings to gather input from residents. He also outlined that a finished plan would put the city in position to seek grants for development of parks and recreation projects, including the proposed trail, inside the city.   • Police arrest man for burglary of grandfather's Electric City home

    Police have arrested a 26-year-old local man suspected of burglarizing his grandparent’s Electric City home. Grand Coulee police had been looking for him when someone called to say Michael Snyder II had been spotted at the Coulee Dam Casino. Police arrested him there Monday and, after allowing him to finish his coffee and have a smoke, took him to the Grand Coulee police station, where investigators linked him to the burglary on Miller Avenue in Electric City, the home of his grandparents, Milton and Marcia Snyder.     The grand prize for the Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Triple Fish Challenge, fittingly, is something that will make fishing easier for the winner.   • For much of area, outdoor burning is illegal

    If you live within the boundaries of Electric City, Grand Coulee or Coulee Dam and are thinking of burning garden waste, think again. It’s illegal, and has been since 2007. The Washington State Department of Ecology has stated that you could be fined as much as $10,000 per day if this law is violated. Officials stated that the ban includes the “urban growth areas” around these municipalities, as well.   • Threats to Coulee City schools force lockdowns, end after high-speed chase

    The lockdown of schools across Grant County was prompted Wednesday morning after a 39-year-old Flagstaff, Arizona, man made threats to shoot up Coulee City schools, according to the sheriff’s office. Benjamin VanTassell is in the Grant County Jail facing multiple charges. VanTassell called Spokane television station KHQ around 7:00 that morning, expressing the threats.     The school board and Paul Turner agreed on a three-year contract Monday night and the Grand Coulee Dam School District has a new superintendent of schools. The board and Turner agreed to a $105,000 annual salary. Turner will take over his new duties July 1. The board offered the position to Turner about a month ago, subject to working out a contract.     It’s hard to go to work if you’ve got no one to watch the kids. That’s a problem Coulee Medical Center will tackle, at least for its own employees, following a decision by hospital commissioners Monday night. They voted to spend up to $15,000 to fund a refurbishment of the basement of the old clinic building to house a daycare program for hospital employees.     The Colville Tribes will gain millions from an agreement approved last week that settles the claims of nearly 700 tribes nationwide against the federal government. The nearly $1 billion settlement with the Obama administration has been reached over claims the government shorted tribes for decades on contract costs to manage education, law enforcement and other federal services.     Eighteen students from Coulee Dam schools will be going to Northern Quest Resort in Airway Heights to continue studies of the Salish language. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved the trip at its meeting Monday night. The trip is for March 8 – 11 and involves members of the Lake Roosevelt Spirit Eagle Society.   • Suspect in custody after Coulee City schools closed

    The Grant County Sheriff’s Office says schools in Coulee City are closed this morning “as a precaution.” GCSO adds only that there have been no injuries and that law enforcement officers are at the school. Reports coming from a person near the school say those officers look “pretty calm” and that the street has not been cordoned off.
