  • Grandmother wins playhouse

    An Inchelium grandmother of three won the DWK Fowler Construction kids’ playhouse last weekend. Andre Pakootas said she read about the playhouse drawing in The Star newspaper and drove here to buy tickets for the drawing. She said that she was delighted to win and that her grandchildren would also be delighted. Each year, DWK Fowler Construction builds a playhouse for kids and offers it up in a drawing. The drawing was made during the Colorama Pro-West Rodeo on Saturday.... Full story

    A group of former Colorama leaders from earlier days emptied their coffers and gave $5,000 toward the cost of putting new lights up at the Ridge Riders Rodeo Grounds just in time for the 55th Colorama celebration that includes the Pro-West Rodeo.   • Learn how to grow your own groceries workshop

    A workshop series on learning how to grow your own groceries will be held Thursday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 8. The Thursday workshop will be held at the CFS conference room, 37 Lakes St. (agency campus) in Nespelem and the Tuesday workshop will be held at the Okanogan Armory, 71 Rodeo Trail Rd., Okanogan.   • Hazardous waste collection

    Grant County residents may dispose of household hazardous waste for free on Friday, May 11, from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Delano Regional Transfer Station. Only hazardous waste generated by households will be accepted. Hazardous products have labels with words such as warning, danger, caustic, flammable, and poison. These chemicals should be disposed of through hazardous waste collection opportunities; not in the garbage, down the drain, or on the ground.   • Earth Day in Electric City had some popular events

    Electric City had its second annual Earth Day last Saturday. Popular among the activities was the Brashears Belgian Horse cart rides that traveled up and down Sunny Drive for about three hours. Electric City’s Volunteer Fire Department took kids on rides and provided them with bags of goodies. Grant County Health District gave 25 free bike helmets to kids during a bike safety program.     Grand Coulee 4/24 - Two residents living on Kelso in Electric City asked police to ban two brothers from crossing their properties. One woman told police that her children had found several drug needles in and around the property and then gave the items to the police.     The Lions Club presents a check for $500 to the Raider baseball team Friday. The money will be used to pay for equipment. The team held a hit-a-thon fund raiser recently for new bases, field dirt and more.     The Nespelem Junior Rodeo is set for this weekend April 27 through 29 at the Nespelem Rodeo Grounds. Events begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.   • Earth Day at Nespelem draws 1,200

    A crowd estimated at 1,200 attended the Colville Tribal Earth Day celebration last Friday in the dance arbor near the Indian Agency. The event was crowned by scores of school-age children in native regalia providing dance entertainment for the crowd of visitors. About 60 Earth Day booths circled the pavillion, giving away information on recycling and other topics. Visitors got raffle tickets for visiting at least 10 of the booths, and a wide variety of prizes were available. A Native drum team provided a serious mood and entertained the crowd.... Full story

    Grand Coulee Police 4/16 - A woman on Young Street reported that someone had entered her home while she was away and stole her laptop computer and a variety of technology items, total value $4,000. Police reported pry marks on her door where someone had forced entry. - A burglary of a house on Burdin Boulevard was reported. The resident reported $100 missing plus some jewelry.
