    Scott Abrahamson, middle, begins the plunge on Eagle Boy toward the Okanogan River Saturday night on his way to a tie for first place in the 80th World-Famous Suicide Race at the Omak Stampede. The 17-year-old senior at Lake Roosevelt High School this year tied with Loren Marchand on Taz in the first tie since 1979.     A workshop to learn the basics on water bath canning and canning jams will be held in two different locations August 25 and 26. On Tuesday, Aug. 25, the workshop will be held from 4:30 - 8 p.m., at the Diabetes Prevention Program in Nespelem. Wednesday, Aug. 26, it will be held at the Omak Senior Meal Site from 4:30 - 8 p.m. These workshops are open to everyone and are free of charge.     The LRHS class of 1985 will be celebrating their 30th year class reunion the weekend of August 21 and 22. Friday night, please meet at the Electric City Tavern for mingling and drinks. Saturday, a picnic for family and friends at Spring Canyon starts at 11 a.m. (Bring your own picnic/beverages.)     The 35th annual Western and Native Art Show, sponsored by the Okanogan County Artists, will take place Stampede Weekend, August 13, 14, and 15, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Courtyard, 28 N.   • Entries sought for sawhorse cow contest

    Adults and kids of all ages are invited to enter the annual Sawhorse Cow Contest sponsored by the Grant County CattleWomen at this year’s county fair. Entries must start with a sawhorse of any size, and resemble a cow when finished. Creativity in designing/decorating the cow sawhorse is encouraged.     First, let’s do a recap of temperatures and precipitation for July. I recorded four days with a high in excess of 100°F. July 2, 3, 4, and 31 were all above 100°F. The high for the month was on the 3rd at 104.1°F. Our low of the month was on the 26th at 52.3°F. My data shows that just about half the month of July was 90°F or above. The home weather station recorded a mean of 78.1°F which was 5.1° above the all-time mean for the month, at 73.0°F. No records broken for July, as the all-time high was in 1939 at 113°F.     Grand Coulee Police 8/3 - USBR Plant Protection advised police that there was a dog kept in a van at the 230 kv switchyard. Police found a Bonneville Power Administration contractor who said he takes his dog swimming in the mornings, then runs him about 10 a.m. and takes the dog home at 11 a.m. The officer checked the van about 3:30 p.m. and the dog was not inside.     Grand Coulee 7/24 - A woman with a Bridgeport address was banned from Coulee Hardware after the store said she was caught on a security camera taking a cutting tool without paying for it. When she returned to the store the next day, an officer advised her that she was going to be charged with theft and that if she returned to the store she would be arrested. 7/27 - Police were called to Burdin Boulevard where a woman had allegedly thrown a rock through her husband’s vehicle window during an argument.
