The Grand Coulee Public Library is hosting an Early Literacy Fair to promote early literacy skills to parents of pre-kindergarten age children. The fun, free event, takes place at the library on Tuesday, October 7 from 5:30 - 7pm. The literacy fair is most ideal for children ages 5 and younger. Grand Coulee Police 9/21 - Two suspects, one from Monroe and the other from Yakima, were arrested after allegedly taking three pounds of bacon, 6 ounces of pork seasoning and two half-gallon containers of orange juice from Safeway without paying for the items. Both are being charged with third-degree theft. The man from Monroe was also being charged with possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to Grant County Jail. Now that we’re into the great fall cool down here in Coulee County, it’s been great to have a few days of crisp, clear mornings, warm, sunny afternoons and cool evenings once the sun sets. Grand Coulee Police 9/15 - A Renton woman staying at Sunbanks Resort asked police about getting a no-contact order against the daughter of her ex-husband who resides in California. She reported that she has been receiving unwanted and profane telephone messages from the California woman. A team from Duvall, Wash. secured their third straight yearly championship of the Pacific Northwest by winning last weekend's Harvest Festival Barbecue in Grand Coulee. Grand Coulee Police 9/7 - Officers checked on a report from Tribal Police that a stolen vehicle was at a location on Sunny Drive in Electric City. The man who had the vehicle was arrested on a Department of Corrections detainer. He told police that he had made a down payment on the vehicle and still owed $2,800. The woman who owned the car stated that the man didn’t have permission to take the vehicle. The man was taken to Grant County Jail on the DOC detainer. Police are looking for a man on a variety of charges, including burglary. Raymond L. John, 20, whose driver’s license gave an address as 4117 Rocky River HUD Road, Omak, eluded officers on several occasions after entering a house on Bowen Street in Grand Coulee, police said. A man and woman at a home at 231 Bowen, who said they don’t know John, told police he came in through a sliding door and sat down on the couch with them. Grand Coulee Police 9/2 - Officers responded to a call about a disturbance on Bowen Street and were told that a man with a crowbar who was wanted on a warrant had been at the residence and then left before police arrived. No threats were made but the residents were uneasy about the man. - Police were called to an apartment on Federal Avenue where a couple had been yelling at each other over an infidelity issue. My goodness, August really brought the rain. SO, how much rain you ask? What we received exceeded all of the past six years for August. Our combined past six years for August brought a total of 1.29 inches. Now, let’s compare the totals for August 2014 – my home weather station received 1.55 inches, and the Grand Coulee Dam weather site got 1.76 inches. The seniors accept aluminum cans ONLY. Please do not put cardboard, plastic bottles or other aluminum in the collection sacks. In 2013, the Seniors collected 3800 pounds (almost 2 tons) of cans and took in approximately $1500 for the Senior Center. That is approximately 30 cans for everyone in the Grand Coulee Dam area. The program helps keep the doors open at the seniors and keeps the cans out of the landfills.
