    Ten Years Ago A bill in the state senate would tax camper and motorhome owners to support state parks, and have the effect of canceling a recent parking fee imposed throughout the state. The parking fee, $5 a day or $50 a year, has been criticized as double taxation by those who think state government should run its parks without the parking income.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved two trips for students and chaperones at Monday’s board meeting. Victor Camarena, project coordinator for Step Pipeline to the Future at Lake Roosevelt High School, is in charge of both trips. On March 21-23, Camarena will take four students to the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, NM.     Grand Coulee Dam School District will be represented this year by Marianna Clark, 8th grade (left) and Rylee Pitner, 7th grade at the NCW Regional Spelling Bee on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. The regional bee is hosted at the Eastmont Junior High School in East Wenatchee.     Brandon Byers, an English teacher at Lake Roosevelt High School, was named interim principal at the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School by the school board Monday night. Byers is finishing up his principal credentials at Whitworth University this year and is one of three candidates to apply for the position. Byers replaces Lisa Lakin, who has moved over to Center Elementary School as principal.     The boards from the Nespelem and Grand Coulee Dam school districts districts met jointly last week, in another of what have become quarterly meetings. Concerns were shared about the two districts’ school calendars for next school year. Efforts have been made in the past to get the two calendars as closely aligned as possible.   • Food service truck has been recovered

    A food service truck stolen from the Grand Coulee Dam School District has been recovered. Two district employees traveled to the Seattle area last Wednesday and brought the 1994 Ford truck back to the bus garage for repairs. The truck went missing sometime during the weekend of Feb. 9-11, and was found abandoned on Interstate 5 near Seattle by the Washington State Patrol.     Jesse G. Storey, Grand Coulee, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Valley Care Center in Okanogan. Jesse was the second son of Harold V. and Mary Seresun Storey, born August 9, 1929, in Seattle, Wash. He grew up in Seattle and moved to Grand Coulee to live with his uncle and aunt during his high school years. He graduated from Grand Coulee High School in 1949.     The town of Coulee Dam has indicated that it would be in favor of going through a “value engineering” study of its plans for the proposed wastewater treatment plant. Town officials Monday issued a statement that they have invited an engineer from the Department of Ecology to brief council members on the process and procedures of value engineering at their next meeting, Wednesday, Feb. 13, starting at 6 p.m. The public is invited to the meeting.     Grand Coulee Dam School District board members took next year’s calendar and turned it upside down at their Monday night meeting. A printed calendar for the 2013-14 school year was given to board members at the district’s last meeting a month ago to give them an opportunity to look it over.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board debated Monday whether to allow ACH (Almira/Coulee/Hartline) athletes to train with Lake Roosevelt track athletes. And ACH won, but only after a debate that ended with a split school board vote. Last season, ACH athletes were allowed attend practice at the district track to train with Lake Roosevelt athletes, but compete for ACH at events. And from reports, everything went smoothly.     A killing in Connell resulted in a lockdown in Grand Coulee Dam School District schools Friday after police notified the district that the suspect could be in the local area.     The state of Washington ranks second in the nation in National Board Certified teachers a report for 2012 stated last week. Washington remains a national leader in both the number of new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and the total number teaching in the state’s schools.
