Lady Raiders win three of four close games
The Lady Raiders fastpitch team lost a close one to Omak before winning both games of a double header with Almira-Coulee-Hartline last week.
LR led Omak up until the seventh inning April 27 when "Omak's bats came alive and our defense did not respond," according to Head Coach Jaci Gross. LR lost the game 6-5.
"Their pitcher garnered 17 strikeouts, which didn't help our cause," Gross said.
LR offensive highlights include Emma Marchand going 3-4 at the plate with singles, Sawyer Steffens went 2-3 with singles, and Senior Kyona Edmo went 1-3 with a triple.
LR's pitcher Emma Marchand struck out eight.
LR hosted Almire-Coulee-Hartline in a double header April 30, winning the first game 9-8.
Helping the win was Sawyer Steffens, who hit a homerun, in addition to a single.
Marchand struck out nine batters.
LR then won the second game 14-11.
"We started out behind, but our bats came alive and we scored seven points in the bottom of the second inning," Gross said. "The momentum held on for the rest of the game."
Marchand had a homerun and a single at bat, and struck out seven as pitcher.
"Hitting Coach Mike Steffens has been working relentlessly with this young team," Gross said. "They are making progress every day. In [the ACH doubleheader], their improvement was clear. Our base running was aggressive and powerful. We still have a lot to work on, but we are making progress."
On Monday, LR defeated Okanogan in a home game 8-7.
"It was a phenomenal game," Gross said. "Tied going into the bottom of the seventh, Sawyer Steffens walked. Emma Marchand hit her in for the winning run."
"It was also exactly two years ago that [former pitching coach and grandfather of Marchand] Terry Warneke died," Gross said. "We have TW embroidered on our uniforms in honor of him."
LR's next games are on the road in a doubleheader against Liberty Bell on Friday, May 7 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Baseball loses to Royal, ACH
The Raiders suffered a string of losses in baseball this past week.
In Royal City, LR was shut out April 27 by Royal with a 14-0 final score.
"Brit and Wyatt Egbert both had hits against Royal City," Head Coach Billy Nicholson said. "Tyson [Nicholson] and Tanner [Kiser] both pitched well, but we made too many mistakes to stay in the game."
Then in Coulee Dam on April 30, LR narrowly lost game one of a doubleheader with Almira-Coulee-Hartline with a final score of 7-6.
"Malachi Rasmussen had a big two-out single in our first game to knock in two runs," Nicholson said. "We competed, but just couldn't do enough to pull off the win in the first game."
Tyson Nicholson pitched seven strikeouts in the first five innings of the game.
LR lost the second game 12-2.
A road game was scheduled for yesterday against Quincy.
A home doubleheader is scheduled against Warden on Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
An away game is scheduled for Monday, May 10, in Tonasket at 4:30 p.m.
Track and field competes in Bridgeport
The Raider track and field team competed in Bridgeport with eight other schools last week.
Sergio Galicia placed eighth in the 400-meter race, the discus and the shot put events, and placed fourth in the javelin at the April 29 event.
"He whipped the javelin for a new personal record," Head Coach Lori Adkins said about his throw of 116 feet, 11 inches.
Chelsea Dudley placed second in the discus with a distance of 82 feet, three inches.
"She puts in tons of practice time on this event and it's paying off," Adkins said.
The Raiders will compete May 6 at the North Regional Championships at Manson.

Golfers hit the links at Sage Hills
There were no official scores from Sage Hills Golf Course in Warden where the Raiders played on April 27, but they did get to play.
"Many of the greens were under heavy repair and not really playable," Head Coach Steve Files explained. "We took five boys and they still were able to walk the course and play the game from tee to green. The weather was ideal."
Varsity players Daxton Whiteman and Terek Bush both "looked good out there and continue to improve," Files said.
The Raider golfers were looking forward to competing at the Okanogan Valley Golf Course today, May 5.
Tennis plays Manson, Wahluke, and Royal
The Raider tennis team had a busy week.
The Raiders hosted Manson last Wednesday, and on Saturday travelled to Mattawa, where they played against Wahluke High School, then to Royal City, where they took on Royal High School.
Scores were unavailable for the matches prior to deadline.
A tennis match in Okanogan is scheduled for Friday, May 7, at 3 p.m.
