Lake Roosevelt athletes participated in sporting events for the first time in about a year.

"It was great to see the kids back in action and going," Athletic Director Tim Rasmussen said. "It was great to be able to follow all the safety guidelines and protocols and get kids back playing games. First weekend, we had a huge success for Raider Nation."

Streaming football and volleyball online was also a success, Rasmussen said, with links to view broadcasted events found at http://www.lrraiders.com .

Volleyball

The Lady Raiders volleyball team hosted two teams on Saturday, Wahluke and Tonasket.

The Lady Raiders defeated Wahluke 3-1 in four sets to win the match but lost 3-2 against Tonasket.

Wahluke and Tonasket played each other at the event, as well.

"We did a fantastic job hosting the event for all-day volleyball," Rasmussen said. "We had great volunteers and workers."

"It was amazing getting back into the gym again and finally getting to compete!" said Head Coach Teri Sue Reed. "I really thought it would be harder to adjust to wearing a mask and following protocol, but honestly, it's been easy. After the first few days of getting used to playing in masks, the girls kind of forget that they are wearing them. They never complain about it."

"They are just so happy to be back with each other playing the sport that they love!" Reed continued. "The girls have been working so hard to get back into shape and get to the level where we left off last year.

Reed said she was pleased with the teams' "decent first showing" Saturday and is "excited to build a young team and really prepare for our regular season in the fall!"

Football

The Raiders played scrimmage-style football at a jamboree held in Quincy where they competed against Wahluke and Manson, running 24 plays against each team, 12 offensive and 12 defensive.

"It's been over 460 days since we competed [in football]," said Rasmussen, who is also the head football coach. "Defensively, we looked strong, and kids looked good offensively as well. The kids did a good job going out and competing, and it was good being out in action."

Cross Country

The LR cross country team competed in Moses Lake Saturday they ran a two-mile course at Blue Heron Park. Runners were sent in waves of 30 spaced one minute apart.

"The host school did an excellent job running the event," Head Coach Billy Monroe said.

"The LR athletes did really well considering they had five practices to get ready for the first race."

The race was shortened down to two miles compared to the usual 3.1 miles.

"This was a great adjustment that allowed us to get back into the swing of competing," Monroe said. "We are a young group with a lot of potential!"

Runners are allowed to drop their masks during the race, but have them on at the start and after they finish.

Schools at the event included Moses Lake, Quincy, LR, and Ephrata.

Out of 49 total boy runners, Chase Marchand was the top finisher for LR, placing ninth with a time of 12 minutes, 26 seconds.

Out of 19 total girl runners, Marteena Oflynn-Fulfer was LR's top finisher, placing 16th in 21:21.
