Mary Jo Carey, 79, former mayor of Elmer City, Washington, passed away Saturday morning, May 9th, 2020, at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, Washington following a brief illness. Mary Jo was born in Texas on Thursday, March 6, 1941. Following graduation from high school, she worked for the National Parks Service as a Ranger, serving in that position until her retirement. Mary Jo loved her community and as a member of the Elmer City Council, who loved a good debate, Mary Jo could 'sometimes' be passionate and outspoken about issues she cared about. Mary Jo served as Elmer City Mayor from 2003 through 2013. On March 14, 2014, Mary Jo was honored for 16 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Elmer City, with a plaque presented at a meeting of the Elmer City Council.

Never one to sit around and be idle, Mary Jo was an active member of the Grand Coulee Dam Lions Club and Grand Coulee Senior Center. She also enjoyed going for long drives (often as a reason to go shopping!), sewing and loved working in her yard and garden.

Predeceased by both of her parents; husband, Robert Carey, daughter, Robyn Holm and brother-in-law:, Ken Carey; Mary Jo is survived by her longtime friend and companion, Don Andrews; grandchildren: Erica Peralta, Calista Holm-Henninger, Joshua Holm, Zacharia Holm and five great-grandchildren

Due to the present Covid-19 situation, Mary Jo's Memorial Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
