Lake Roosevelt’s Darin Whiteman tied for 12th place at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association State Golf Tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Club, held May 21-22.

“Darin performed extremely well under intense pressure conditions,” said Raider Coach Steve Files.

Out of 40 1B/2B golfers, Whiteman finished tied for seventh on day one, with 80 strokes throughout 18 holes. The top 20 golfers go on to the second day.

Whiteman finished tied for 12th on the second day with 85 strokes, “a great accomplishment,” Files said. “That’s the best finish of any boys’ golfer since I’ve been associated with the program.”

“He’s a competitor,” Files said about Whiteman. “Confident and even tempered. He has put a ton of work into his game, spending long hours practicing, playing junior tournaments around the state, going to golf camps, and playing with his dad. He hits the ball a long ways and has a solid all-around game.”

Files said the course was damp and foggy in the mornings but sunny and warm in the afternoons.

“The course was pretty flat and narrow, with fairly small greens,” Files said. “There were water and/or natural-area hazards which were very penal for wayward shot-making, but fair.”

Files added that it was the best of three state golf appearances for the senior.
