School board thinks student representative would be good thing

A school board last week discussed the idea of seeking student input on issues related to the school that students attend.

At their March 25 meeting, directors of the Grand Coulee Dam School District tossed around the idea of having a representative from the Associated Student Body attend school board meetings to bring thoughts and concerns from the student body to the board, and to take information back to the student body from the meetings.

Superintendent Paul Turner cited Manson School District as having an ASB representative attend their board meetings.

“They don’t do anything official,” Turner said. “The student sits up with the board, and is involved in the discussions. There is no voting power, and they can’t sit in on executive sessions, but other than that, they use it as an ASB position.”

Turner spoke about creating a position for the role, while the board expressed a desire to simply have the ASB president attend the meetings, or the vice president if the president couldn’t attend.

Director Butch Stanger said the district used to do just that.

“I thought it was good participation by them,” Stanger said.

“A neat learning experience for them too,” Director Rich Black added. “It’s a nice leadership position.”

The board agreed that the idea should be pursued.
