Twenty Years Ago

The Electric City Town Council last night turned down a request from Rose and Andy Bise to operate a car detailing business out of their soon-to-be home.

Grand Coulee Dam Area Junior Miss Brita Montes heads to Pullman Jan. 17 where she will participate in the state Junior Miss competition.

The GCD Area Chamber of Commerce will conduct its annual installation banquet on Jan. 15.

Five eighth graders came to the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce meeting last Thursday to present their design ideas for flood-proof housing. They included Shane Proctor, Aaron Schoning, John Carson, Kayla Truscott and Ashley Irwin.

The new year brings a new chief judge for the Colville Tribal Court in the person of Slate Aycock.

It’s been a couple of years in the making but last Thursday the Colville Business Council settled the overtime claims of Tribal police officers and EMTS. Their vote directs $106,000 in back pay of overtime and benefits to tribal police officers and another $41,251 for tribal emergency medical technicians in Inchelium and Nespelem.

Thirty Years Ago

The Elmer City Council accepted the resignation of the town’s mayor last Thursday night after councilman Steve Hood read the letter from former mayor Mike McKay. McKay moved to Sacramento in December following a career choice.

While a smaller voter turnout than was needed two years ago will be required to validate the GCD School District’s special levy election next month, a citizens levy committee isn’t taking anything for granted.

Planet Earth Players are preparing for a spring production of the musical “Wind in the Willows,” scheduled for the middle of March.

Selected as Raider of the Week was Tim Hare.

Minimum wage will increase this week going to $4.25 per hour.

Forty Years Ago

Grand Coulee Dam’s Junior Miss Tammy Allex is in Pullman competing for the Miss Washington Jr. Miss contest.

Seems like it is becoming a bit exasperating but the weather picture here continues to dominate the news. It goes without saying the sub-zero temperatures have been in effect for over two weeks in succession.

One suspect from this area has been arrested and charged with the recent burglary of the HICO self-service station in Grand Coulee.

Pictured in the Jan. 11, 1979 Star are newlyweds Shelly Scallen and Eric Corbin, who tied the knot December 16, 1978.

Selected as Students of the Month included Samara Morger and Robert Skordas. The GCD Rotary Club sponsors this program.

The 1978 Christmas Baby was a daughter for Robin and Frances Somday of Coulee Dam.

Fifty Years Ago

The House Laundry has set up temporary service at 108 Federal Ave in Grand Coulee after losing its building to fire last week.

Plans are being made to open the Grand Coulee Community Center soon after the first of the year. The finishing touches are being put on the new center, located in the Van Cello building.

Over half a million visits were recorded in 1968 for Coulee Dam National Recreation Area.

In recent basketball action the Grand Coulee Tigers were defeated by the Freeman Scotties 56-53. High Tiger scorers were Lee Button 13, Bill Roberson 12 and Pat Warner 9.
