Twenty Years Ago

Last Wednesday evening a small section of the hillside just below Coulee Community Hospital fell. What it exposed was the danger the hospital is trying to avoid in moving its electric transformers away from the edge.

Two fire departments attacked a house fire in Coulee Dam Thursday morning, but despite their best efforts the home of Doris Matt was burned severely.

Cougar sightings continued last week, but none have been captured. All the cougars have been seen just beyond the end of Central Drive in Coulee Dam.

First baby of the year was Allen Max McKay born to Kandace and Allen McKay of Nespelem on Friday, February 5.

Thirty Years Ago

Tuesday was a “win-win” day for the Grand Coulee Dam School District with a yes vote to the levy.

Bitter cold weather swept into eastern Washington and much of the country last week, causing a variety of winter problems, both locally and nationally. The subzero temperatures accompanied by strong winds brought high demands for energy.

Three major sponsors of the Junior Miss-Miss Grand Coulee Dam pageant have announced $1,500 in scholarships for the year 1989. Security Bank is giving $500 for Miss Grand Coulee Dam, Coulee Dam Credit Union is awarding $250 to each of the princesses and the Junior Miss Committee will give $500 to the 1989 Junior Miss.

Forty Years Ago

The annual drawdown of Lake Roosevelt began the latter part of last week.

The Raider girls are headed for the District Tournament this weekend. The Raider wrestlers are also going to district.

Coulee Closet celebrated its seventh anniversary with a celebration on Valentine’s Day.

Fifty Years Ago

Lake Roosevelt is frozen over for the first time in many years. Some sections freeze over annually, but seldom does the ice extend from Grand Coulee Dam to Canada. The only known clear spot is at Keller Ferry.

Sixty Years Ago

Grand Coulee Grade School will play host to a tri-county basketball tournament.

Women of Rotary sewed at the hospital last Thursday. They include Mrs. A.F. Darland, Mrs. Ray Seely, Mrs. Borden Wilbor and Mrs. John Holland.

Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Lester Sherwood of Coulee Dam have brought the stock to the Diamond Shop in Grand Coulee formerly operated by John Behrman. They will conduct a new place of business on Spokane Way two doors west of the Continental Hotel entrance.

The Grand Coulee Tigers defeated the Coulee Dam Beavers Tuesday night by a score of 46-34. Eylar paced the Tigers with 10 points and Caviness hooped eight for Coulee Dam.
