Decade-old entrance sign idea revived

A design proposed by Graybeal Signs of Wenatchee shows a sign 17 feet wide by 8.5 feet wide.

The Electric City council discussed putting a large sign at their southern limits that would welcome people coming into town from the south on SR-155.

The sign would read "Welcome to Electric City," and "Re-energize your recreation," with the city's logo suspended between aluminum columns made to look like basalt rock.

The motto is the winner from a contest held in 2007 to come up with a motto for a potential sign, which was submitted by a citizen.

The council voted to have City Clerk Russ Powers look into the price for a sign that would also include a drop down sign that reads "Visit the Ice Age Park," or possibly something interchangeable that could be changed, depending on local events.

The construction of the Ice Age Park is still pending grant approval.

A cost estimate for the sign from Graybeal Signs was $42,000.

"The interest we earn in our general fund will more than pay for this sign," suggested Councilmember Rich McGuire.

One thought that came up was if consolidation of area towns passed, the sign topic would become moot.

"If [consolidation] does go through, miraculously, then we'd be paying this money for a sign that doesn't mean anything," said Councilmember Lonna Bussert.

Councilmember Aaron Derr suggested "Welcome to the Historical District of Electric City," as an alternative in that scenario.
