Books and wine event tonight

A new Friends of the Grand Coulee Library group is working to make people aware of its benefits and is inviting people to an unusual type of promotion: “Reading Between the Wines,” which will take place at The Wine Bar on Grand Coulee’s Main Street tonight (Wednesday) from 5 to 7 p.m.

Called a “book tasting,” those who attend the event (adults only; it is a bar) will learn more about services offered at the library and can browse a collection of books for sale that the group will bring.

Electric City wants more info on consolidation

The Electric City Council last night took no steps toward putting the question of consolidating with other local towns on the ballot. Council members wanted more information on the process and possibilities. The Star will publish a story on that discussion next week.

Food bank benefits happening

North Cascades Bank is accepting donations for the Care and Share Food Bank through the end of this week.

Coulee Medical Center employees collected 879 food items for the food bank last week, and also donated $260 for supplies for the Lake Roosevelt Schools nurse.

Road work

If you’ve driven through Coulee Dam in the last week, you know the highway is getting some kind of work done. A crew is burying fiber optic cable in the roadway belonging to the Colville Tribes, which plans on connecting fiber across the tribal reservation.

That work is not related to another company’s work of stringing fiber optic cables through Grand Coulee lately. Charter Communications is upgrading its communications and cable TV system in Grand Coulee and reportedly is working toward that goal in Coulee Dam, as well.

And if you are heading south along Banks Lake today (Wednesday), be advised that the state Dept. of Transportation is knocking down loose material from the slopes and cliffs along the lake. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes until 4:30 p.m.

If you’re Apple Cup bound …

The Washington State Patrol will be conducting emphasis patrols from Nov. 15 through Nov. 25 as Washington State University (WSU) students and fans travel across the state for the Thanksgiving holiday break and Apple Cup in Pullman, the WSP said.

Its District 4 troopers in Spokane, Whitman and Adams counties and District 6 troopers in Grant and Kittitas counties will be focusing on speeding to include driving too fast for conditions, distracted/impaired driving and other collision-causing violations during the emphasis.
