Penny auction changes to a dime

It had to happen sooner or later.

An annual event that has served as a fundraiser and annual kickoff to the local holiday season is making a fundamental change, organizers announced: the penny auction will become “The Ten-Penny Auction” this year when it’s held on Nov. 17, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, at the Lake Roosevelt High School gym.

The “auction” has, in the past, sold tiny slips of paper, each worth a penny, used for “bidding” by putting them in cups in front of each item up for bid.

This year, said Tammy Norris, an organizer, supporters will buy sheets with 25 perforated, numbered sections, each worth 10 cents, plus one matching door prize ticket, and a final claim stub to keep for the drawings, all for $2.50.

This year the event will be sponsored by both the Junior and Senior classes of LRHS, to earn funds towards their senior trips. The students will be out in the community requesting donations from businesses soon. If you would like to make a donation, items are always welcome and may be dropped off at the school district office, the high school or elementary offices.

“Looking forward to another fun Saturday, spent with family and friends, chatting and laughing,” Norris said.
