All the questions you have about small planes could be answered May 12, during a special fly-in at the Grand Coulee Dam Airport.

The fly-in is sponsored by four organizations: The Colville Confederated Tribes, NASA Science Mission Directorate, Northwest Earth and Space Pipeline (NESP), and the Red-Tailed Hawks Flying Club from Everett, Washington.

NESP spokesman Tedrick Mealy said last week that he expects at least seven planes for the event, which will run from noon to 3 p.m.

It will be a teaching experience with pilots explaining the different aspects of flying small planes, and some of the mechanics, as well.

“We hope that families will come out to check out the aircraft,” Mealy stated. The event has been scheduled for the time after the Colorama Parade is over.

“Kids can sit in the pilot seats, familiarize themselves with instruments, and generally get a feeling for the plane,” Mealy said. “We want members of the community to take part in STEM activities, pre-flight checks, and of course, visit with the pilots.”

The fly-in is not part of the Colorama Festival, but occurs at the same time.
