Electric City residents will notice a lot of street repair happening this year in several spots around town.

Electric City Council authorized Mayor John Nordeen II to proceed with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) grant street repairs at its meeting Tuesday night.

The FEMA program was a response to an exceptionally hard winter in 2016-17, when many small cities were hit with unusual street repair needs.

The city had received two grants totaling just under $200,000 earlier, and by council action Gray & Osborne was selected to provide engineering services for removing and replacing damaged pavement and subgrade sections for 18 locations within the city.

The 18 locations, and square footage of repair, include: 3rd Street NE and Sunny Drive intersection (680 sf); Kelso Avenue (450 sf); Kent Street (100 sf); Kelso Avenue and State Street intersection (200 sf); Grand and Western Avenue intersection (100 sf); Grand and Goodfellow intersection (100 sf); Gold Avenue (360 sf); Gold Avenue and Crest Avenue intersection (80 sf); Crest Avenue from Electric Boulevard to Washington Place (420 sf); Hillcrest Avenue - Park to Grand (330 sf); Grand and Miller intersection (556 sf); Coulee Boulevard and Electric Boulevard intersection 108 sf); Road 58 1 NE (390 sf); and Grand and Jackson intersection (100 sf).

The contract, when let, will provide for removal of the damaged pavement in each location, excavation and waste haul of the existing subgrade materials to a depth of approximately 12 inches; installation of 6 inches of compacted, crushed surface course; 3 inches of compacted, crushed surfacing top course and 3 inches of compacted, hot-mix asphalt.
