Grand Coulee council gave Dorothy Harris another 90 days to get the number of dogs she has down to two.

Harris and her sister-in-law, Doneen Harris, had been operating a dog rescue on Young Street and had worn out their options before both the city’s planning commission and the council.

The council gave Harris 90 days to find homes for her dogs. That 90 days would have expired in mid-November.

She had been told by council that if she needed more time she would have to come to the council and ask for it.

She did last Tuesday night, and her request for another 90 days was granted.

Harris had stated last week that she is making progress in finding homes for some of the dogs, and is particular about to whom she gives them.

Out of frustration and a sense that a change in city government is needed, the two started a write-in campaign for two city council positions that were up for election. Dorothy Harris was seeking write in votes against veteran city official Councilmember Tammara Byers; Doneen Harris was challenging Councilmember Tom Poplawski. Both Byers and Poplawski are seeking four-year terms.

Both of the Harris women stated that the city needed to change the way it looked at serving the public.

Dorothy Harris said that she would have filed for one of the positions but she didn’t know the filing dates. She had stated that the city needs to inform its citizens of open seats and the filing period.

The dog rescue operation has been terminated, Dorothy Harris told the city. She hasn’t disclosed how many dogs she still has.
